Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: 20hp Vanguard rattles when shutting off.

After reading it above,  the sound is more like when a motor runs on or tries to run backwards.   Is there a way to test the diodes?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 20hp Vanguard rattles when shutting off.

Hi everyone
I have a model 35 Vanguard, a Performance V Twins short block with stock heads, shimmed springs, ARC flywheel and 2 bbl carb on gas.  If I run hard, when I shut it down it makes a rattle sound and a puff of smoke out the carb, it will do this once every 5 -6 races.
It all started when my bumper got pushed into my rear tire and finished the race not realizing it was working harder than usual. I have checked the usual, flywheel key, valves, compression.

Any ideas what is happening?

Kohler Engines / Re: Kohler CV14S Walbro LMK carburetor issues.

Hey, so I have a Walbro LMK carburetor on my Kohler Command CV14S with the letters and number K and 3 and 61602 on it. Now Im having some issues with it. It will idle fine and run good while on the gas for maybe a lap and a half and then it will start spitting and sputtering and if you give it any gas it will die but it stays idleing. Any information or ideas as to why its doing this would be helpful. Thanks

I'd say lack of fuel for sure, since it runs good for about a lap and a half,i would start with making sure fuel tank is vented and fuel filter is not plugged, then move forward from there,it sounds like your issue is somewhere between tank and carb.

Not enough fuel, are you using a pump and if you are what is the vacuum source ,or the line is leaking ,maybe the pump is bad. maybe the float level is too low or the float can't drop enough to let much fuel into the float bowl ,possibly the fuel line has a restriction in it

When Ryan Kerr raced with the Kohler he used no flywheel at all ,The only thing he had was a piece of quarter inch aluminum with magnets to trigger the ignition .When he raced in Delaware Ohio  2008 and won the finals I was talking to Bobby Clevland and he wanted me to show him Ryan's mower .When I told him about the no flywheel he wanted to see what it was about,I don't think he believed me.

Isn't this a little off topic :twocents:

Wow they do cost a lot more. Ya battery power was my first thought to.

I tested at the starter and had 12.51v so i thought maybe if i run a another battery parallel ill have more power. So i pulled the batttery out of my truck for a combined total of 12.80v at the starter and 1600 cold cranking amps and it still will not turn it over.

Only way it will turn over is if i ran jumper cables from my truck and have it running then it will turn it over.

Of the mods ive done to the motor the only ones that would effect compression are im running .010 head gaskets, precision cams cheetah grind, and gapless top compression rings. I havent put a compression gauge on it yet.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Which High Torque Starter? (Stock has 16 teeth)

Well ordered the 15 tooth denso off ebay and got it installed and the gears line up fine but it doesn't have the power to turn it over.

Got to looking at it and its a denso knockoff not the real thing. Where are you guys buying true denso brand starters?

I use the aftermarket starters all the time and have sold at least 30 of them in the last couple years with no issues.
Keep in mind this is a much larger starter and needs more amperage to work properly and battery must be keep fully charged or you will ruin the solenoid real quick. You may have just gotten a dud

To answer your Question the briggs denso starters can be gotten new from any briggs dealer,Precision cams could get you one and im sure EC can as well, but their pricey new $250-280..Good Luck
