Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Briggs 31 Single Non-AVS OHV Upgrade Path
« on: January 29, 2015, 02:52:41 pm »
I am running a Briggs non-avs 31 single, I currently have a flywheel, new head w/ split locks, governor deleted, and the adjustable jet in the carb. What is the typical path you guys go with these things to get more power out of them.

I have been searching around but it seems like there are alot of different answers.

I will compile the information below:

Stage 1:
-Confirm you have split lock valve spring keepers
-Billet Flywheel
-Governor delete

Stage 2:
-Aftermarket rod
-Aftermarket cam & valve springs
-Balance crank

Stage 3:

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Briggs 17HP 31 OHV Single Upgrade Path?
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:13:38 am »
So I am trying to pep up my 31 ci Briggs single. Here is what I have done so far..

-Billet ARC flywheel (currently set full negative which should be stock)
-Governor delete w/ throttle pedal & OMB throttle linkage
-Most recent Briggs OEM head w/ split lock keepers
-EC adjustable needle jet kit
-1.25" exhaust, about 24" long

It currently revs to about 5400 but wont go any higher. Is it safe to assume that the stock valve springs are allowing the valves to float at this point?

What would be next to help this little motor out?

I have already searched a bunch but haven't found any solid info.

I currently have a cheap Chinese tach installed that responds a bit slow, tomorrow I will be installing a genuine Tiny Tach for faster response.

Driveline / Peerless MST-203-568 any good?
« on: June 20, 2014, 08:57:09 am »
A friend of mine acquired a 3 speed Peerless transmission, the part number is H MST-203-568 and below it says 1174B-0033.

Is this trans any good? I searched but didn't come up with anything.

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Misfiring Briggs & Stratton 17HP Single OHV
« on: June 14, 2014, 10:13:56 pm »
I am stumped. I am working with a 17HP OHV single Briggs, model 311707.

It will start up and idle fine but if I try to rev it up it will misfire and then pop out of the exhaust if I get off the throttle. Sometimes it will eventually come out of the misfire but it still feels like its not very powerful in the higher portion of the RPM band. (See video below)

Here are some things I have already tried to fix the issue:
-Fresh 93 octane
-New spark plug
-Checked and set valve clearance
-Checked and set ignition coil clearance

Current mods:
-Throttle pedal installed in place of the original throttle lever
-Stiffer spring installed on the governor

Some things I noticed...
-When spinning the engine over I noticed that the intake valve seemed to bump open and close a tiny bit after its normal cycle. I don't know if this is some sort of feature for this engine or if something weird is going on with the cam?? (See video below)
-It appears this motor was originally equipped with the solenoid on the carburetor fuel bowl but when I got it the solenoid was gone and the bolt holding the fuel bowl on looked a bit odd,  it was threaded on the outside to and had a small allen set screw inside it. I ended up replacing the fuel bowl, gasket, and bolt and the bolt supplied with the new bowl was just a plain bolt. I am not sure if the original bolt was special or needed?? (See pictures below)

Anyone have any ideas? Does this carb need modification to get anything over stock mower RPM??

Driveline / Where to buy splined pulley for transmission?
« on: July 06, 2013, 11:40:35 pm »
I have a 93 MTD mower with a 7 speed transmission. I am looking to replace the transmission pulley with something smaller. The shaft that the pulley is on is splined and the pulley is held on with a nut, the shaft is about 5/8". All the pulleys I have seen on here are held in place with a keyway. Where can I buy a smaller pulley to fit my transmission?

Briggs Flathead / 18HP Opposed Twin Performance Upgrade Path
« on: April 16, 2013, 10:47:59 pm »
So I work for an auto performance shop and for one of our company parties we all decided to build and race some lawnmowers. So I bought a MTD rider that is equipped with a Briggs and Stratton 18hp opposed twin motor, the model number is 422707. It is completely stock at the moment. What is the typical upgrade path to make this thing fast on a budget?

Here are some things I am for sure planning on doing:
-Remove governor, install throttle pedal
-Deck cylinder heads
-Build free flowing exhaust

Any info would be much appreciated.

Also, I already emailed Don about getting one of those DVDs.
