Coffee Shop / barter fairs/trade meets?
« on: November 07, 2012, 06:28:35 am »
Are there any swap meets for this kind of mechanical stuff in Michigan, and if there are where and when are they?  Do they get posted here somewhere that I could check once in a while?

SOMETIMES BACK PRESSURE IS YOUR FRIEND. ;)

Cool...  I suspect as my use is not racing, but strong as possible and reliable I will put a 3/4 inch male pipe muffler in each after all.  The big diameter one that looks like a mushroom.  I tried to go 1 inch and received disaster for my try with a ruined block.  I need a compact, light unit overall.  I'm not going to push the envelope much again until I have more experience.  I am going to smooth and radius things modestly though.  I should be able to get by with that.  Bring 'er up to spec's on rings, bearings and such, then put a good carb. on 'er.  All Don's oil mods of course.  Not too exciting, but a good start I think.  If that isn't enough then I'll try the exotic stuff.  I plan on doing one of those 31 piston, 46 crank cubic increase when I can too.  I'm looking for one of the rare (so I read in posts) big-bore 46's around here also.  I'm not so interested that I can go for shipping or driving cross-country for one... :P

The post's that you read refering to the pipe nipple were for single flatties,go ahead and remove threads on opposed, polish away and work the short turn radius.Exhaust port should taper larger as it leaves valve.
Aha...  That type of error is not unusual with me.  I thought I was scanning only oppy posts, but apparently not...  You now make sense, especially the growing larger and never smaller, as it goes along and out the pipes.  Thanks!  Now all I need is instruction how to create an Arnold Torque-a-nator...  It likely is just fine stock but in good "blueprint" condition?  Plus the lube improvement, of course.

Reducing the size of a port is counterintunive....bigger=faster.....but when you are talking about flow..and trust me...it IS  flow that makes you go.....its sorta like having an open ended water hose...you turn it on...have water coming out the end at a certain rate....but if you partly cover the end of your hose with your thumb...in effect restricting it...what happens? The water cames out at a much higher velocity...if that were a port...the VELOCITY increases.....and so does your ability to fill and empty that cylinder. That is the secret...being able to charge and evacuate that cylinder rapidly.
I'm sorry, but that is just hard for me to accept.  I spent the first 15 of my working years as a plumber, and your hose anology makes no sense.  You are restricting the flow so the pressure goes up, but the volume goes down.  You get less out the hose...  What you get is less horsepower from "pumping losses" within the engine.  I ain't buying it. >:D

Parr-dune my ignoramusness, but I've read in previous posts a couple times that making the oppy threaded exhaust SMALLER(!) by putting in a 3/4" pipe nipple flush with the block actually INCREASES the amount of work (torque) the oppy puts out?  A low-rpm hard-twisting engine is what I want, thus my interest in the oppy twin.  This reduction is counter-intuitive to my understanding of port and polish, but I can take it on faith from wiser minds and do it if that statement is correct.  Any more I could do to make the oppy a strong-twisting low revving engine?  I have Don's DVD, and the oil mods are a must, as is adding slickeryness to the ports.  (man, would that reduction cause a poo-storm about pumping losses in my other engine groups...)
