Honda and Clone Engines / gx390 fuel system
« on: July 09, 2013, 06:30:53 pm »
Guys, I have a gravity fed fuel system on my gx motor. Running a stock style carb will I need to add a fuel pump or will it flow enough fuel? And if I need a pump will the needle valve need any mods to keep from overflowing? I am going to start running it with just a billet wheel and valve upgrades until I save up for a can and rod so I can get a feel for the chassis.
Thanks

Yep, FInally found the Honda instructions on how to just knock it out with a hammer and clean up the hole. I was trying to be too careful. Thanks for the reply.

Honda and Clone Engines / GX340/GX390 ELECTRIC STARTER INSTALL
« on: February 10, 2013, 01:14:31 pm »
Hey guys, is there any secret to installing an electric starter on recoil start engine? Didn't know if the starter is centered by the mounting bolts or if the hole needs to be drilled perfect to install the starter. Thanks

Just a thought but you haven't changed the kill wire that goes between the coils? We had a kawi that was backfiring on one cylinder when the other one would fire. The Kawi we had didn't run a diode in the harness to prevent crossfire, the one we had was a two barrel so it was easier to isolate.

I know alot of people will sat this is wrong but the last two IMOW mower that I built I used matching 4" pulleys, trans running a 700 in fifth gear and a 15 tooth to a 60 tooth an the axle. Yes the counter shaft gears are 1:1 ratio in third but there is a 15 tooth pinion running a 42 tooth bevel gear if i remeber right. I had four 700 trans that were 2:1 ratio between the input shaft and the output shaft. Alot of guys say you have to run third but other guys say you are still pulling the final drive ratio when all done. A build motor should run third and over drive the pulleys to make the trans last longer.
Also Art Neavil and Chris VanMastrich are running the last two machines and usally run up front.
Hope it helps

The loss of Jim will leave a huge void in lawn mower racing. The IMOW races will never be the same. Jim was great for giving advice to his competors, he wanted everybody to have a fair race and be competive. Many a race Jim and I went wheel to wheel and bumber to bumper. Jim gave me a pep talk at my first national event in Genoa City, WI. I was scared to death, and Jim grabbed me and siad " listen, you have been getting good starts all year, you get on that tractor and stay to right of the track and blow right by everybody". Sure enough sitting at 14th position on the start I thought about what Jim said, the flag dropped and I drove just how Jim said. Ended up third place in the first corner. Never would have done it without Jim's coaching. After the race Jim told Bruce he expected me to be the next IMOW national points champion and Jim was right. Jim really saw something in alot of us that most people would take for granted. With a tear in my eye and a ache in the heart I know at one point Jim touched all of us. Mow on jim , love you buddy!

Guys, the best thing I ever ran was John Deere cornhead grease. It flows like gear oil when running but sets up like thin grease when not in use. I could run a 20 lap feature and and hold your hand on the trans and it would not be hot at all. You still shoud prep and seal the trans. I ran primarily in AP and IMOW and never had and trans issues. Ran two full seasons of local and national races and never had to change the lube.

Honda and Clone Engines / Re: PREDATOR 420CC ENGINE

Thanks guys, they are on sale for $350 plus 20% off with coupon. Was hoping to use an Arc rod and flywheel and a cam change. Was thinking to only mill the head a little to keep compression reasonable. I want to build something mild and reliable until I get some runtime on the chassis.

I know alot of guys had good luck with the older blue ones from Harbor Freight but didn't know if the new black Predators were still the same. I'm hoping the only diference is the bore.

Hi, has anybody experimented with the new Predator motors at Harbor Freight. It looks very similar to the GX390 on the outside but I am wondering if the ARC parts will fit and gasket availability.
