Admin Announcements / Lightning hit my internet gateway
« on: June 16, 2023, 01:55:59 pm »
Sorry for the outage folks.  We have had a lot of storms here the past few days and lightning took out my cable modem.  I have all sorts of protection on the power side and nothing else got hit, so it must have come in through the cable.

Admin Announcements / Forum Crash Recovered
« on: June 18, 2022, 03:51:27 pm »
We had an extended power outage the other day and the forum software version decided it no longer liked the database version.  I have been sick with Covid and just didn't have the energy to put to this until today, so sorry for the outage.  It does not appear that the database was harmed, so nothing should be missing.  Let me know if you find anything strange.  Also, there may be some features missing that I have to reconstruct but the meat is available.

Kohler Engines / Re: Stock engine RPMs
« on: August 21, 2021, 09:36:47 am »
I can't speak for individual organizations or insurance companies, but if you alter the engine in a way that removes the governor's stock max RPM limiting function, the safest plan for both yourself and other racers around you is to switch to a flywheel that is designed for racing.
I have been on the track when a competitor's stock flywheel came apart right in front of me.  His chain broke and the engine immediately accelerated to destruction.  This was a Yamaha "F200" engine where the base engine was either made by Yamaha for Kohler, or for Kohler by Yamaha.  Our "racing" max RPM target was about 6k rpm but that was exceeded quickly when the chain broke.  That is when billet became the rule in that class.  Almost every single time a rule has been made to mandate billet flywheels when a stock flywheel used to be allowed, it was because of an on track/dyno/rev-stand failure that far too often resulted in injury.
Heymow does not advocate the use of a stock flywheel in an instance where the governor on the engine has been removed.  If the governor is removed, an SFI certified billet flywheel should be used.  I'm not going to entertain an argument or "what if" scenarios about this.  I don't want to hear "So and so organization allows..." because I don't make or influence someone else's rules.  Seriously, don't test me.  I don't have time for it.

Hey Big Mike, could you point me toward the post you quoted in post #3 above?  It didn't credit the author.  -Thanks, Tom

I personally prefer a forum to all the noise on FB.  And the information is so fleeting.  I have some additional plans for the new year.

Coffee Shop / CNC machine I built
« on: February 01, 2017, 04:26:36 pm »
I thought some of you might like to see this.  It is called a "Mostly Printed CNC" because all the plastic parts are 3D printed.  The files needed to print the parts are FREE!  http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:724999 The metal rails are plain cheap 3/4" emt conduit.  The electronics can all be bought inexpensively online if you can configure them yourself or for a little extra from the machine's designer. I bought most of my electronics and tool bits from him to support his development efforts.

Here is a video of mine:

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: ARC Flywheel Balance
« on: November 10, 2016, 10:35:50 am »
Unless it has been altered since it left ARC, the flywheel is zero balanced, which means if you put an on-center shaft through it and place the shaft on top of parallel and level knife edges, it won't roll.

I was just told that Stacey Crowl from ARMA has passed.   She is obviously a big part of our community and I want to express my condolences to her family.

You are going to need to post questions like this in an appropriate section of the forum if you want a response.  Most folks won't see it here.

Welcome!

I look directly into my front yard from where I sit at my desk, and this morning, among the millions of blades of grass, there was one single blade with a drop of dew on it that was reflecting the sun.  I thought about how one small seemingly insignificant thing can make something stand out so brilliantly among so many.  It was the only blade of grass I noticed.  Find your dew drop.
