Chassis / Building an FX! Need some help.
« on: November 24, 2007, 01:19:13 pm »
Well the cats out of the bag!  I'm going to build an FX for 2008.  Need some help from the guys that have built them.

Here is my "plan."
Running a OLD MTD full chassis.   The one with the small rear fenders.  It is what I have and it is small and light.  Going to run a 28 OHV.  Belt drive to a jackshaft with a cart clutch on the jackshaft.
I have a good idea of what I need for parts, but wheels and tires are hanging me up.  And that is what you need first to get the ride height correct!
I want to run the Bridgestone or Dunlop treaded tires.  They don't come in many sizes.  What size tires are guys running, I know I see some with narrow fronts and wide rears.  Some with wides all the way around.  Any help would be great!  Also what size rim do you run with kart tires.  I'm use to streaching out lawnmower tires!  Do you use the rim to get your stager?  OR do you just use air pressure?

Any help would be great!

Also is this mower still considerd a "pan chassis?"  The frame is bolted together in the rear.  Can I chop this thing down to 38" and be legal?  It is 42 right now.  Or would I be better off using a newer MTD and chopping it down to 42"?  I have several mowers, just no "small" framed ones!
Thanks in advance
Paul

Driveline / Gear Charts/Calculators, etc
« on: October 14, 2007, 09:14:00 pm »
Here is a gearing chart that I found that has been very helpful.  It is from 9 tooth to 23 tooth. and 9 tooth to 60 tooth.   This is the only one that I have found that goes that small on the rear sprocket.
Hope this helps!  Feel free to post other gear charts in this topic.

Driveline / Peerless 700 discovery and question
« on: August 09, 2007, 12:58:42 pm »
O.K. 700 Guru's
Did some maintenance on the 700 yesterday and found a few things.
First the information
Found out my bearings were walking like George talks about.  Had to get a spacer made.  Looks like you could just put 3 bearings in there, but they are about 1/16" to much.  So I had a few spacer made at the machine shop.  Ended up with the 3/8" long one.   It fills that gap good and gets the bearings as far apart as you can and still get the oil seal in.  But they had to be machined as there is no pre-made pipe that will fit in the case and allow the shaft to spin freely.  So had some make out of cold rolled tube, so that is going to be expensive!!!

Now the problem.  The snap ring that holds the input gear on the input shaft is wearing.  The ends were broke off and the ring was about 1/2 gone.  Has anyone else had this?  Is there a fix?  Didn't have any good ideas, so I just put a new snap ring on and reassembled.  Guys at the machine shop though a thicker snap ring or doubling them up would be the answer, but they didn't want to try to cut the shaft because it is so hard.  Any help would be great.

Post Your Video / #150 Sp Video
« on: December 12, 2006, 09:30:33 am »
Here is a short vid of my SP doing some exhabition laps at Carson during our 4th of July races.  It is only a exhabition so I'm not "on it"  just putting on a show for the crowd.  The second vid is some old school racers that we use to race.  Mine is the yellow cub and my buddy is on the deere (it was stolen a year ago).  Those are our first builds I think from 3 yrs ago and are running stock motors.
Enjoy

Briggs Flathead / 31 CID questions/comparison
« on: October 10, 2006, 08:56:02 pm »
O.K. This is going to be long so bear with me!
Trying to get things in place for next season.  Going to make more races and I realize that I need a spare engine.  I curently run a SP with a 28 cid briggs in it.  Basicly a G-team motor---Don's cam, 11hp head, ARC rod, small piston .020 over, ARC counter balance weights, ARC wheel, Don's carb, my porting, stock valves and springs.  Runs up to 6800 real strong.
It runs killer but I was wondering if a 31 would be better, or even worth the extra money.
So I guess I would like the input from guys that have run both.  Likes and dislikes.  Does the 31 have more hp and torque?  Is the 31 better suited for a certain style track?  So any input or recomendations would be great, I have 1 good motor, I just would like to have one that can't be beat.
I realize that I may be asking for secrets or info that someone may not want public, so you can pm me or send me a e-mail at pkrueger@win-4-u.net.  I won't forward anything, I promise!!!!!
Thanks
Paul

Driveline / Deal on new 700-039 update
« on: August 01, 2006, 08:39:43 am »
O.K.
Here we go, as you know I have a source for new 700-039 trannys at a good price.  I have good news and bad news.
Here is the good, I "could" make it work
But now the bad
the main supplier has changed the price they are now $255 and currently out of stock.  If thats not bad enough they have added a shipping charge on top of that, another $30.  So we are up to $285, then I'd need approx $20-$25 to ship it to you.  So is is not looking good is it.
About the out of stock, they were not sure they were ever going to get any more in.  The one I bought they had on the shelf for a long time.  Could possibly special order direct from company but another Fee!
So it looks like a no go at this time, if something changes I'll post it here.  My best advice, check e-bay there is a bunch of them on there now.  I just got 2 in the last week.  One for $60 and another for $35.  I was biddign on one but not real serious about buying and it only brought $50.
Sorry for the bad news

Chassis / George, "Iowa Rookie" needs help with set up.
« on: July 06, 2006, 01:19:00 pm »
George or anyone elso who can help me,
We are going to race on a go cart track an I need help with my set up and gearing.  We will have limited time to prep for the race once we run practice because they are running carts the same night we race.
Hope you remember me George,
Paul Krueger
#150 SP Red metal flake Craftsman
Was at Aroma park and Mendota to push my Mower!!!
Got it fixed with a new 700 and a HEAVY plate like you suggested.  I have run a couple of local races and things seem to be working now.

Anyway we will be racing on a 1/7 mile oval with slight banking.  Was wondering if you had any input on tire pressure and gearing.  I'm not sure what we are getting ourselves into.  This is a huge track and it will be fast.
Now I'm running 6 Psi in both fronts.  4-6 psi in the left rear and 7-12 psi in the right rear.  Depending on the track, I have found that on a rougher track the less psi is faster and smother.
My gears.  I am running 8" pully on front and 6" pully on trans.   I have a 4 speed 700 and I race in 4th (that is 1 to 1).  I curently have a 10 tooth on the trans and a 40 tooth on the axle.  Was thinking I needed a 20-25 on the trans, but I'm not sure.  I know that you run a 8 to a 4 on the pulleys but I hate to spin the tranny that fast, and I finally have that belt problem fixed so I don't want to switch pulleys.
Sorry for the length but I wanted to include as much info as possible.
Thanks in advance.
