Thanks for the input Ron, I was thinking about taking the block and heads to a machine shop and seeing if they could recondition the heads and possible bore the cylinders out to fit these pistons http://www.arcracing.com/servlet/the-979/Wiseco-Piston-Rings-Set/Detail and go from there.

The rest of the block looks fine, its just the cylinders that are in bad shape. Do you guys think re-sleeving the cylinders would be an option, i cant seem to find any new sleeves any where.

Jeff - The new plug were from me seeing if it would run since it isnt getting any spark. The old plugs have been trashed but were intact, nothing broken off of them. Im going to continue the break down and ill get some pictures of the cylinder and rings in a little bit and post them here.

Jim - Do you think boring the cylinders is a possibility?

Thanks for the reply Owen, i was thinking maybe something got in to the cylinder and got smashed around. Possibly a piece of the exhaust?

So i started the break down on a used 23hp in preparation for a build im going to do and when i took off the heads i was greeted with this........

So what do you guys think might have caused this?  Would i be able to ever make the cylinder operational again with maybe boring it out and going with bigger pistons? Im certain ill just buy some new heads, possibly performance heads if i can find some.

This is what the other cylinder looks like.

40 intek pistons, arc stock length rods and Precision cam  with a set of  EC roller rockers and valve springs and retainers with the billet flywheel will give you all the power you need then some.

Awesome George thanks for the input! 7000rpm would be perfect for my application, do you know if they will work with the ARC stock length or extended rods? Is there some website you buy those 40 cube pistons at? Bare with me, im so new at these engines im lost on where to find parts.

Thanks Will, ill see if i can get in touch with him.

I figured all the info would be the same as the engines are identical be it on a mower of mud motor.

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket piston that will be a direct drop in when using the stock length ARC rods?

Briggs OHV & Vanguard / 23HP briggs vanguard build help
« on: September 29, 2013, 11:34:03 am »

Hey guys, ive acquired a used briggs vanguard 23hp for a mud boat and im wanting to do a build on it. I just finished a predator 212cc(honda GX200 clone) build for a smaller mud boat with great results and am hoping to duplicate that on a larger scale.

Only down side is im having a hard time finding parts and info for the build, any info you guys might be able to share will be greatly appreciated.

Not looking to go crazy with the build but thinking about dropping in some rods, pistons, nice cam, increase compression with a smaller head (not sure if installing a head from a smaller HP v-twin would work 16hp or 18hp) fly wheel, exhaust, better carb etc. Anyone know where i could get some of those parts? 8)
