Chassis / Steering Question
« on: July 18, 2008, 01:10:51 am »
How far does your wheel turn from lock out right to lock out left?  When I set mine up we had to run it just over 1/4 turn from lock to lock because of how the front axle is made and where it had to be mounted.  I can maybe get a little more if I redrill the mounting hole and adjust the rods so they do not bind and hit each other, but I am going to try it first and see how I like it.

Also, my mower sits about 5" from the ground and the steering connection is about 3.5" off.  I have ready that many are at 2" without any issues so I will leave that too...

Just a few more things to finish and the mower is race ready  :D

Post your Pics! / Finally a picture of my Mowracer
« on: July 13, 2008, 09:16:51 pm »
This is a picture off my cell phone, but it looks pretty good.  The chassis is just like the build George had on the build thread, so no need ot see the underneath  ;)  The engine is a 40cid twin so it will be ready to rocket soon.  I only have the steering to finish and then the drive belts and gear setup....  We have started to sand down the hood and will get everything else done this week!

What do you think so far?  This is after 4 evenings of building.  My dad goes to bed pretty early (early riser) so we have limited time to work on it

Chassis / Frame Notching
« on: July 01, 2008, 09:54:14 am »
Question:

Can you notch the frame up front for your tie rod and still be US legal?  The rod that rubs on the bottom of my frame.  I could swap a few things out and refab a bracket but it would be easier to notch out the frame 1/2" so it no longer rubs...

Chassis / IMOW front axle from ACME Mowersports
« on: June 27, 2008, 12:02:39 am »
If you plan on getting one of these axles make sure you talk with Mike and let him know what rims you are running.  When I ordered mine we talked about it and I told him I was going to use the wide tires so I needed the axle to be narrower.  Well when we went to put the axle on tonight it was 1" too wide (39") with no spacers on it.  So I call him up just to let him know and to see what I should do.  Mike was great on the phone and said I could sent it to him and he would cut it for me and sent it back, BUT that is mower time away from racing and I do not need that :)  Besides, my dad was a fabricator for Polaris Ind and we just cut 2" out of it and welded it back up.  No problems now and I have a rolling chassis now waiting to be finished :D

So just heads up, make sure you let him know what size rims you are running so you get the correct width axle.

Driveline / 700 Setup - pulleys and sprockets
« on: June 11, 2008, 09:21:35 am »
I have searched the board and no where have I found a thread like this.  You can find bits here and there about what guys are running but it is hard to put it all together.  So I thought I would start a thread asking the question.......

What size engine / trans pulleys, trans / axle sprockets and tire size are you running on the Peerless 700 setup?

I know there are many different setups but it seems like the 700 is one of the most common trans right now for racing and I think this will help guys out when ordering the sprockets and pulleys.  Trying to finalize my build and get it done in less then 2 weeks so getting the right stuff the first time is a big deal.

Tires / Tube the front or not?
« on: June 06, 2008, 11:12:51 pm »
Just received my front rims and will be mounting the tires this weekend.  My question is do you guys tube the front tires??  They are 13X6.5X6 on a 7.25" rim.  I have the tubes if I need but not sure if I have to use them or not...  I will be tubing the rear tires for sure.

Next question is when you use the tubes do you just pull out the valve stems in the rims and put the vale stem from the tune though the hole?  Wou would think a grommet of some sort should be used just in case the tube slips in the wheel...

These wheels are going to look great!!  :D  I can not wait to get them on my mower....

Driveline / Would this axle be strong enough??
« on: May 22, 2008, 04:01:14 pm »
I am building up my 600 Peerless and I found a thread where Squid posts a 3/4" solid axle that could be put into the 600.  Now, it has a hardness rating of Brinell 156 and I am wondering if this will be strong enough to race with.  Not sure how strong the axle are that come in the 600 but I want a solid axle thru the 600 body.  This axle is keyed 4" on 1 side and 14" on the other.  My idea is to get a 48" axle and cut it down to 43" leaving 2" of keyed shaft on each end.  this will give me a 38" wide axle and keep the keyed slots out of the 600 transaxle body...  I am going to measure this tonight to make sure that the 36" will not work before I go with the 48".

Anyone else know of a good 3/4" axle for the 600 transaxles, or any 3/4" transaxles out there??

Driveline / Peerless 601 input shaft key size
« on: May 19, 2008, 10:45:25 pm »
The 601 transaxle I have has a small key on it for the input shaft.  I bet it is around 1/8".  The other transaxles I have are bigger then that.  Is there something I can change to get a bigger key slot on the 601 or what do I do to put on different pulleys on it?

Briggs Flathead / Difference between 11.5HP 28CID and 12HP 28CID
« on: May 15, 2008, 02:31:05 pm »
I am starting to get my engine ready to build and was wondering what the difference between the 11.5HP 28CID and 12HP 28CID are....  The 11.5 is much newer and I would like to use that block if there is nothing different between the 2.  I also have a 11HP 25CID engine that I might pull the head off and use on the build if it is worth it.  What do you think?  This build will be a new one for me  :D

Driveline / RABG with F-N-R
« on: May 08, 2008, 10:17:59 pm »
I found a few more mowers tonight.  1 had a peerless 600 transaxle and the other has a live axle with a RAGB that has F-N-R.  Anyone seen a gearbox like this?  It is out of a Gambles mower.  I will be using some of this mower as I really like the look and feel of the hood, but will be putting them on a different mower  ;)  (same parent company)

My question is do you think this gearbox will hold up in an CP or similar setup??

Driveline / Jackshaft Pulleys - Same size or not?
« on: May 06, 2008, 11:57:27 am »
Should you run the same size pulleys on the top and bottom of the jackshaft?  I am getting everything ready to finish my build and trying to get the ratio correct.  If you run different size pulleys will it affect the jackshaft in any way?

Driveline / Jackshaft Pictures.....
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:43:06 pm »
After a lot of reading and searching I am going to build 1 of my mowers with a jackshaft.  Now comes the fun part, building or finding a good jackshaft, finding a good location and getting it mounted.

Anyone that is running a jackshaft on their mowers please post pics of your setup.  I would like to see how you are doing this so I get it right the first time...  ALSO, where does one get a good setup jackshaft??

I guess this could go in the Driveline forum too

Driveline / Peerless 700??
« on: April 21, 2008, 08:45:19 am »
Is there different 700 trannys or are all of them about the same?  I found a 706 and it's a 5 speed with reverse.  Just wondering if this is a good tranny or if I should keep looking...

I have built my mower with a Foote tranny right now but will be switching it out when i get a good 700.  I have found 4 Foote 3 speed trannys during my search  :)
