Well folks I forgot to take a before picture But here are some of the chasiis pics as I got started. Its a mid 90's walk thru chassis and will have everything tucked under and stay a walk thru. Maybe I can get the owner to send me a before picture I know he has one. Or he did..
Anyhow we want the chassis at 4-1/4" front and rear to do so we have to remove the lower section and make the chassis square and the same front to rear. You can see in the picture below what I am talking about.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0410102003.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0410102003.jpg)
This Picture you can see what I cut off and the end result
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0410102004.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0410102004.jpg)
The next two pictures show the end result of me flush fitting the rear clip to the front in order to have a smooth inside for the tubing to fit against.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0410102004a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0410102004a.jpg)

here is a stand off view of the above I also have a cassette mount tacked on. This will be using 8" rear wheels and will still have a 4" ground clearance without cutting the fenders for clearance. This will require them to be relocated/raised a bit but when done you won't know it. More on that later.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0410102005.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0410102005.jpg)
The next pictures are how I installed the square tubing front to rear for chassis stiffening. I used 1" thinwall. Its a straight shot except one spot where it turns in due to the front of the frame getting narrower.

More later.. I have the rear axle in and trying working on how I am gonna do the fenders get that done then will work on trans plate and transmission placement.
-
looks like a good start
-
I am farther than that but got to figure some thing outs before I show more...
-
Kijiji up here has two of those chassis for $250 running 6 hour round trip to get them i might do it :)
-
What make chassis is this? I believe I have several different walkthrough style frames a Murray, MTD, Craftsman, and a Lawnflight! I really hope to build one for my next chassis.
-
MTD just lke the pro-x, the Super Modified and the Purple and yellow Chassis I built.
-
i sent a before pic to you george
-
Got it will put it up tonight
-
I went through the trouble to take a picture, so I am posting it anyway. LOL

-
Thats what I was hoping it was!!!! I got one now I gotta get the money to build it!!!
-
Hey George what transaxle comes in a MTD walk through ?
-
A vari drive piece of crap..
-
I was hoping for a peerless :(
-
nope
-
any process?
-
Pictures soon.

Well this one has been a challenge trying to get everything in tight yet 4" off the ground and use 8" rear wheels per US rules. I have cut it upo and started over several times but making progress. Phillip sorry for the time this is taking but I think when done you will be very pleased.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0618101627a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0618101627a.jpg)
Here is the transmission in. I have slid it forward a bit Phillip wants the walk thru but it will not fit completely under. I have several things to do to make it look like it belongs. I think this is gonna work well.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0618101626b.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0618101626b.jpg)
Dash is mounted this being a twin it will need all the room it can get under the hood. The tank is notched in back to fit around the column, so I notched the factory mount slid it back and up a bit and got a bit more room.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0618101626a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0618101626a.jpg)
Just a generic side view nothing special here.

Here you can see the original tank mount how I notched it for column clearance and the column in place this is the original column used to mock up mounts.

Bottom view of transmission mounted and clutch and idler. Things are so tight the idler sprocket I generally use will not fit. But the flat idler will do the job.

More later. Back to work for me.

George, Your BP looks good in the build section. The only thing I do know is the flat idler won't last long. I had the same situation as you do space wise so I tried the flat idler and it was almost grooved through after a very short time of test runs. I am running a skate board wheel now with a slot lathed into it for the chain to ride in. My only issue is I wish that I had more space as some sprocket combos make half links necessary which I hate because I don't trust the little cotter pins to hold in the half link pins. I can send you a pic of my flat idler. I don't know even an micron as much as you on racing mowers but I wouldn't run another metal flat idler.
-
Well its not my BP, I am building it for a customer. I will keep the idler in mind. I work in a machine shop so I can machine a skateboard wheel. I have never had a half link fail. I generally put a dab of silicone on the cotter pin and also on the side of the master link and never had any issues.

using one of the donor chassis I raised the rear box since this will be using 8" rear wheels and 4" off the ground.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619101916b.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0619101916b.jpg)
Looking at it from the top it looks oem thats the purpose as this machine must pass US tech.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619101917.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0619101917.jpg)
Here you can see the fenders have been extended again using a donor. Trying to get the trans in a location that works yet still maintain the walk thru of the chassis has been tough. Messed up a few times in the process. BUT I got it figured out now.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619101917a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0619101917a.jpg)
A look under the fender the chain will be covered nicely
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_0619101918.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=0619101918.jpg)
here is the front of it once done the trans will be covered and when removing the fenders it will all be one piece.
-
WOW!! That is a total different animal then what is normally cruising around here. Walk thru design is tough. Mine was a walk thru style but i had ample frame to work with. This thing is definately a tight fit george. But my only question is on the trans and covering it up. In US you can not have any of it showing correct? And you mentioned a cover for it, kinda like a "molded" in bubble in the fender so it looks factory? that would be awesome. or will it just be a bolt on cover? Anyhow, looks great
-
The cover is gonna be part of the fender. Mus remove it all to get to it.
-
Larry's been using a flat idler like that on his for a chain tensioner, that mower has probably at least 30-40 races on it and no problems. Maybe you just had a bad bearing rc, I dunno? He managed to get his tranny under the fender...barely, man those things got no room in there!
-
Ok back on it. NO MORE racing nothing till this thing is done. Want to Give Phil a CHIRSTmas present. Here is a view of the left rear from the front with wheels on.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1111101611.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1111101611.jpg)
here is a look at the trans and fenders in place. rear end is done. Clearances are good.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1111101610b.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1111101610b.jpg)
Here is the rear view. Will get started on Chain guard tomorrow night.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1111101610a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1111101610a.jpg)
here is a side view. Pulled spindles off makeing a change or two there. But its 4" off the ground, fenders and tires fit nicely and look natural. Motor fits in under the hood quite well. Took a bit to get it right for air filter. Once finished with battery compartment I will show it. Think yall will like that. But we are back to work hard at Herrin Mower Sports Chassis and Engines now that the season is over. This is what I enjoy the most
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1111101610.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1111101610.jpg)
-
With the Tank in low I had to do the same for the Battery. Down low and left. As you can see its set down in the chassis
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1113101404.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1113101404.jpg)
See its a tight fit but is in the chassis safely tucked away
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1113101405.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1113101405.jpg)
A bit closer for you to get a better view

Looking under the chassis you can see how I boxed it in for the battery to sit down in and yet be protected.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1113101406.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1113101406.jpg)

Chassis is reinfirced for the motor. I used 1/8th thick flat bar this also levels the mounting area
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1120101246.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1120101246.jpg)
Here is another view of it. Ready to sit motor on and add the pulley and get a belt size. Will post those tomorrow.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1120101246a.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1120101246a.jpg)

Ok with motor on and all pulleys and clutch mounted I run a long belt thru all the pulleys except I go around the edge of the rear. Pull tight and mark the belt. Measure it and this gives me the length I need.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1120101302-1.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1120101302-1.jpg)
Here is an overall view of the belt and pulley system
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1120101302a-1.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1120101302a-1.jpg)
Here you can see where I pulled the belt tight clamped with some vicegrips and i then mark it take it off and measure from the end to the mark.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1120101303-1.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1120101303-1.jpg)
Here is how I do the bolt for the clutch rod. I put it in a drill and whilespinning it I turn it down using a flap wheel on grinder I turn it so it is beveled. Once done I use an impact and spacer and nut tightening it so it pulls the beveled head into the bolt hole wedging it in flush. Now it only required a socket to take nut off and head of bolt does not drag on anything.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1120101339-1.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1120101339-1.jpg)
Had to turn it around on the lift so I rolled it out and decided to get some quyick shots of what its gonna look like. First couple are with hood off.

We are using the 10" brake disk on the rear and still have to box in the slot for the sprocket which will be the chain cover.
(http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/th_1128101352.jpg) (http://s48.photobucket.com/albums/f232/GeorgeHerrin/?action=view¤t=1128101352.jpg)
Back to work....

Finished the exhaust awhile ago. Will install it tomorrow run all the brake lines wire it. Bleed brakes and should be ready for testing.. Then tear it aprt do the body work n paint. Getting close. Will post more pics by the weekend.

George, is that the MCP1710L?
-
Yes it is!!! Wouldn't run anything less with 8"wheels.

Great, thanks. The 1710L is now on my build list :)
In my brief motorsport career I've seen endless people always wanting MORE POWER, but very few understand how good, larger brakes can make you faster.

Someone has done their home work.
Like I've posted before, you and others have been so kind to post all this information about your builds, what works, what might and what will not work, it's the least anyone can do. Even though I'm pretty much just following your MTD build, I as you know have a build thread over on the ARMA board to maybe help out others as well.
-
George, I'm running 6" kart wheels with the 12" burris tires on my pro-x. Will the 10" brake disc work?
-
I don't think so.
-
George, I'm running 6" kart wheels with the 12" burris tires on my pro-x. Will the 10" brake disc work?
No way! That only leaves you 1" clearence from disc to the ground. Any serious bumps and the disc will turn into a taco shell. Id look for a 8" disc if you can find one. If you want max braking without dragging the disc. Not sure who makes them but I have seen them that size.
Chris
-
Or, cut the 10" down if yo cant find the 8?
-
I have the standard MCP one now. Probably gonna stick with that one. Adding from brakes so it shouldn't be a big problem.
-
Maybe a little late, but this is what I used on both my mowers. They make a hub to fit it also. http://www.bmikarts.com/item/8-Brake-Rotor---Gold-4828

I have gotten all out of whack on the pictures so not in an exact order.

I will post more pics as I sort thru them. I have tested the mower and its stupid crazy off the corners. Very much like the purple chassis I had. It was the hardest pulling thing I ever drove off the corners as a conventional chassis not a supermod. This thing will be an awesome sight to watch as it tote the front tires off the corners. Now Its the nasty work the body work. All the little welding and blending and snading and finsihing then PAINT!!!
IF their is something you want to see and don't see the picture let me know I will try to get it for you.

George did you step DOWN the exhaust as to the normal stepping up? Looks like alot longer primaries than you normally do? Are you on to something we're not aware of yet here on heymow? LOL!! Nice looking build yet again!!
-
1-1/4 o.d. headers, and god eye yes a bit longer primaries. I have tried this setup on a couple other machines with the Inteks and like the results. I also used this setup on my 03 thru 05 bp with the vanny's and loved it on them. Its a proven setup its not for every engine. But on certain engine builds it does very well.

What kinda of tranny you running?
-
Its an EC tranny. This mower is for sale if you want a top notch racer!
-
Thats what I was hoping it was!!!! I got one now I gotta get the money to build it!!!
Dont worry about getting the money Chris.... your parts are being ordered for you as I write this.. 1 off the jig one on. Go TEAM
-
so I take it the clutch pedal is mounted on the right side. could it have been mounted on the left side?
I got the same clutch from EC and I was going to mount it on the left side, dose it make a difference?
-
The clutch itself MUST be mlounted on the slack side of belt not the pull side thus the right side.
-
Thats what I figured after thinking about it, I knew there was a pull side and a push side, just forgot it . But thanks for the answer Bob
-
About how much did you add to the chassis to get the fender clearance?
-
2" was added to the seat box/frame and same to top of dash tower.
-
I've seen this racer first hand and it has inspired me and my son to build a racer as a father son project.
I've built pulling tractors but this will be our first racer.
