Tires / Re: stock front rims

yes do make sure to reinforce the rim, i just had the center break out on one laast weekend......it was quite the ride on a broken rim!

so far he has two seasons on the varidrives. i think he is running a 5" on the motor and trans. so i'm betting he did reduce the pulley size on the trans.luckily we have quite the tractor graveyard to pick parts from.

sadly at the moment these are just back yard racers. we've got a group of about 12, but the closest sanctioned races are 3 to 4 hrs away. all our mowers are basically stock, just pulley swaps. we have one guy that has figgured out how to get the vari-drives to run, and man they are quick.

also i haven't run the govener too far on the twin, just gave it maybe 300rpm more. it's been fine so far and this is it's 5th season with 12 or so races a year

i've done nothing to the single cyl. didn't even touch the governer. i'have only adjusted up the gov. on the twin, the rest is stock. i do think the one lunger is an ohv, i'll have to go peek. most of my performace has been from pully swaps. it's amazing how much quicker the single is. not even close off the line. top speed is about even tho

Briggs Flathead / looking for more torque off the line 16hp briggs twin
« on: January 06, 2015, 02:38:59 pm »
i have a good running 16hp briggs twin, but compared to my 16hp single cyl. briggs the twin is very slow to accelerate but has great top end. i tried pully swaps but then i lose top end. i know there must be a difference in torque from the single to the twin, but is there any way to get more ooph off the line? maybe jetting? tried the search, but i'm not sure exactly what to look for.
also it's a 1980 or 81, i'll get the ser. # if needed

well i tore out the old transaxel, and put in a foote 5spd i had. so far so good, but it keeps kicking out of 5th gear on a hard pull. i've tightened the deten spring a bunch, and it made no difference. any idea's?

nope the varidrive pulley is free and greased. i was thinking of using as a yard tractor/mower, not for racing. i might make a winter project out of it tho and put in a foote trans i have that is very similar to a peerless 826, so i could make up the clutch mech. so far the tractor still moves very slow in 1st and reverse. the belt from the mower is spinning, but the back belt wont engage.

Driveline / sears gtv16 help please
« on: June 22, 2013, 12:07:44 pm »
augh, it's a varidrive :bash:  i know nothing about this set up. it has a briggs twin 16hp. i got the tractor for free, mower deck was seized and full of holes, and it didn't run. i completely redid the fuel system, rebuilt the carb and cleaned out the fuel pump, and it now runs. doesn't drive well tho. it barely moves. i changes the rear end fluid and belts, no change. is there an adjustment procedure to adjust this setup? i'd like to make the set up work instead of replacing it. any and all advise is welcome.

Most Peerless transaxles and transmissions we racers run use 5/16"-diameter shift-detent balls.  The Peerless 855- and 860-Series transaxles use 3/8"-diameter shift-detent balls, but these are horizontal-input transaxles (some just F-N-R, mostly 2-speeds, some 3-speeds) used on commercial, industrial and ATV-style equipment, so we aren't likely to see them on racing mowers.

Turns out i had a bad brass bushing/bearing. i replaced it and now all is well 8)

yes, the peerless 826 has a 5/16" detent ball.

thanks for all the advice.

l loosened the breaks and cleaned everything up, and it rolls now. it does seem to have alot of resistance while rolling tho, any ideas?

i found the original ball, its 5/16ths. i got it all back together and now it seems like it's locked up. the gears are free in nutral, but the rear axel wont spin. the tires try to go in opposite directions. the gear selector moves freely thru the gears, but makes no difference to the axel. any ideas?

is the ball bearing a 3/8ths on an 800? it seems too big to fit thru the hole. my original ball stuck to my greasy finger and flew away, grrrr, i happen to have some 3/8ths ball bearings but they will not drop into the deten spring hole.

Every Peerless transmission and transaxle has a detent ball, spring and setscrew.  That is the first thing I remove from the transaxle before even removing the case bolts.
1.  Unscrew and remove the detent setscrew from the detent tower on top of the case.
2.  Using a small pick-style tool or magnet tool, remove the spring.
3.  Using a magnet tool (I have a magnet on the end of my scribe), try to remove the ball from the bottom of the hole.  If the grease is holding it in place and preventing its removal, leave the magnet tool in the hole, then clip a spring-loaded clothespin around the magnet tool just above the detent tower.
4.  Remove the case bolts and carefully separate the case halves.
5.  Turning the cover over and holding it upside-down, remove the clothespin, push the magnet tool into the case, then remove the ball.

By the way, it's the older-style MST 200s that have the two bolts from the bottom holding the center of the cases together.  As of last year (2012), the MST 200s were redesigned to have all top-accessible bolts.

i found the spring stuck in it's hole. grease was holding it in place. thakns for the info!
