Briggs Flathead / starter question
« on: November 18, 2015, 08:26:15 am »
I have a 12.5 Briggs that I want to use to get the bugs out of my first build but I need a starter. I can't seem to find an exact match on the web with the part no's that I have. Other than the plastic gear they all look the same. Is there really any difference?
Oh, and by the way my part no. is 281707
Oh my part number is 281707

Bingo  :woo: Opened that puppy and lo and behold the little steel ball that fits in the detents was frozen not allowing it to shift. Cleaned her up and now ready to make race ready.

Just opened my first peerless. Not that bad, now the guy that gave it to me said it would not shift. Said he only had 5th and reverse. other than being full of grease I can see nothing wrong. Any  ideas of what to look for before I tear into it???

I am building my first mower ,its an MTD and I want to hook  to a go cart axel. My question is what mowers have the Peerless gear boxes and what mowers have RAGBs?? I would appreciate this info before I go digging around.

Would love to stagger up on a peerless as I have a complete rear axel setup, brakes gears and wheels with turf savers already on kart wheels. Thought I would get my feet wet this way first. I have a new 420 pred that I could jack shaft to the axel, may go that way. Still don't know what class to run as there is no club near me. Guy said I might go to kart track and enter run what you brung class. :woo: :woo:
Thanks so very much for the repily

Did anyone read the post? Seriously don't be in such a hurry to bash. No one gave any suggestions about diff or ask what class I was building for and if that's the type of reply I get I'll go back to go karts!!

Racing Mower Builds / task force mower
« on: October 18, 2015, 02:02:57 pm »
Starting my first tear down on a task force mower. has a really good 12 horse briggs flat head but the rest is pretty rusty. The diff is a variable speed thing but I think I can weld it up and make a direct drive. Should I look for a different diff or go with this? Also since I don't have access to a set of torches do any of you use a MAP gas torch to heat medal, if so how does it work? Will it heat to a cherry red? Would like to know before I buy.
Thanks

Kohler Engines / Re: puzzled

BINGO   We have a winner. Drained oil, lots of oil. Have not filled crankcase as didn't have proper oil but I'm pretty sure that's what happened. Will try new oil and a good dose of sea foam in gas and see what happens. Many thanks to those that replied.

Did some more checking this am and its blowing out the breather tube. Cranked and ran fine for 20 min so I got on and put it in gear and all of a sudden it started blowing out breather tube and trying to die. Seems worse when governor kicks in. It acts as if something is sticking then un sticking, sounds stupid but that's it so far.
