Briggs Flathead / Re: OPPY TIMING QUESTION

Invest in an EC Dominator, it is the best bolt on part you will buy. I run an oppy with tons of mods done to it and feed it with a Dominator.  It does have a different cam than yours but I turn it over 7k.  These engines do like a lot of timing though when you turn them up. Remember the plug is like 2 inches from the piston lol.

I know this is a couple weeks old but don't wanta leave the guy hanging. You need an EC carburetor and the black plastic "new style" walbro pump. The carb is WELL worth it's money. Best bolt on part you will buy for it.

The best bang for your buck is have carb done by George@EC.

Right behind Jeff I will put a 3rd on that!

Best money i've spent on mine.  Then there is always lightweight stuff for big cubes which always = HP.

Just throwing this out there but nobody said anything about running it in every class. Alky is no more dangerous than gasoline and no it's not cheaper. By the gallon yes but like people have said it takes twice as much. It does make an engine run cooler though so you can weigh the odds.  It may be corrosive but if you cut the fuel off and let it run out until it goes dead then open and leave open the butterfly on the carb it will all run out an what is left will evaporate.  Just my :twocents:

Thanks catfish!  I'm going to try and find another crank these motors have a nice head design and are built durable so I think it will be good from a starter all the way to a full blown racer

I tried some different searches and found some useful info.  From what I am gathering the 340/390 are the same stroke different bore. Right?  If so I can find a crank out of either that has a straight PTO and in the future I can bore it to a 390+.

Ok I cant find much about the 340 so ill ask!  I have not messed with many Hondas and never a single cylinder Honda.  I have a 340 now that is in GREAT condition!  My question is, what is different about the 340 and the 390 other than 50cc's.  (ex. Is the 340 the same bore with a different stroke or is it a different bore and stroke?)  The reason I ask is because the 340 I have, has a tapered PTO and I am going to change the crank (if I can find one) to a straight shaft to use for racing.  I know I know people want to go bigger CC most of the time BUT this is going on a starter ride.  Its for a girl that has no experience so the size is not an issue I just want to know what parts I can get/use that will work for this motor.  When she gets experience I will add more power but power isn't the issue at this point.  Thanks guys!

Anytime.  Actually this will prolly surprise you but I bought my flywheel brand new with an oppy hub and gear.it was the same price as an oppy flywheel. Your right it is a lot of work and if you haven't done one its not worth the trouble but then again it is almost a pound lighter than the actual oppy flywheel. That was my reason.

I don't think so!!
PJG56. Running the 6611(intek fly wheel body). With an oppy ring gear, and oppy hub with coil adapters and some modifications to the dust cover and bolts under the flywheel, along with trimming off the charging system tabs it will work.  It is not just a plug and play though.  You have to index the crank and cut a new key way for the timing to be right, it close to 90° out if you line the key ways straight up.  It takes some work to dial it in just the way you like it but it will work!  That's the only aluminum wheel that has ever been on my oppy, and it still is now so yes it can be ran on an oppy. Just not without some work.

Listen to Jeff on the heads flat heads need flow for power not compression!!!  And if you could find the 46 cubic inch parts (crank, rods, heads and cam) Jeff was tlking about it would get you a good start.  (Find model number that starts with "46")

Send birdman_express a message on here and he will help you out with brakes. And I assume you are runnin a transaxle so getting the right set up will be a little more tricky but he will know what to get ya.

Now since you have brakes you can start on performance. First off you will hear it preached on here about the aluminum flywheels. Yes we all know they are "expensive" if you only look at price but expensive can be determined by how well the product works and if you get what you pay for.  Let me be the first to tell you that they are not "expensive" once you buy it you will not regret it! And a stock flywheel with no govenor is a safety consern.

Other than a flywheel and brakes for safety you could port the intake, intake and exhaust ports, and like you said a good flowing exhaust BUT yes like Jeff said you need a 2 into 1 collector set up.

O and search oiling mods on here.  You need those definatly with stock rods!

Goodluck!!!
