Title: Supermod for 2011
Post by: 2nstoys on November 04, 2010, 09:07:45 pm
Starting a new build to go and play with the WOO and Soltra guy's. Give me some pointers if you want. Building it as a twin to my BP racer. Starting with a Sabre chassis. Same as my Scott's which is a Deere. Mocked it up last night and still playing with the placement on the seat and fenders.

This is going to be 2 inches off the ground. Should be a fun build. RAGB and a built Vanny.

Glenn Seat looks a little high.. I would look at getting it a lil lower. If your fenders were not there the lowest point of the seat should be right on top opf the frame. No more than an inch off. Just my opinion. Will look good when your done.

Tonight I moved it a little. Got the bottom of the seat 7 inches off the ground and 2 inches off the frame. Leaves room for the RAGB under the front of the seat. Still playing with it. Stuff gets tight with it that low. I will try to get it lower though before I go to much further.

I am just outside of Lansing, in Potterville. Worked on it some yesterday. Got the seat down to less than an inch off the frame. Made some room for the RAGB.

Got the front tires mounted so I am going to work on building the front axle today.

My goal for the weekend is to have a tacked together roller.
More pics after today.

Front end is built and welded to the frame.

Ran some 3/4 tubing the length of the chassis to stiffen. and got the rear axle located and bearings tacked in. Probably going to go with aluminum cassettes. Just don't have them yet.

Glenn, what size of rear tire are you going to use? I would put enough tire in there so you don't have to put biggers tires on later.
Also, if using a treaded soft compound tire, my tires grow about 2.5" in height under power.
Give yourself lots of fender to tire clearance, at least 1.5", I notice a lot of people have their fenders almost touching the tires to get the seat lower in other classes, that is no longer an issue on these machines.
As far as the seat location goes, the seat will look a lot lower when the fenders are raised up.
7-7.5" from the bottom of the seat to the ground is about right, I actually ended up raising my seat up to make my machine work.

Got some 15-8X8 Hoosiers on order. Should be the same size as my BP Rears. That way I can swap them around. Might have to raise the rear fender a little more. I have about 1 1/4 inch clearance now.

Tommy, plans are for a bored out Vanguard. Got a couple more hours into it last night. Built up the fender mount and braced it up.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_Picture3019.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=Picture3019.jpg)
Also braced some of the rear frame.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_Picture3017.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=Picture3017.jpg)
Started to get the RAGB mount made.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_Picture3018.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=Picture3018.jpg)
Anyone ever try to run the engine in this configeuration. It sure does free up some room for steering.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_Picture3021.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=Picture3021.jpg)

Would have to cut the hood for an air cleaner, but I don't think it would hurt the engine. Oil gets slung to the back of the block where the pump is. I've seen some engines in backwards and seem to work ok.

The engine will be fine mounted like that, we did it on a customers governed mod class machine last year.

Is that one using a Peerless 700 instead of a RAGB?

Yes our mod class has to use a shiftable transmision or transaxle.

First one was luck. Happened to be looking at scrap mowers at one of my sponsors and it was sitting with a blown intek, rusty fenders and broken hood. Picked it up for $40 if I took them the hydro, Wheels, tires, and mowerdeck back. This new one happened to be at another repair shop that they had stripped for parts. It is a sabre and had the same frame, fenders, and lower dash as my Scott's. New upper dash, hood grille and fender flares and presto, it's a Scott's. Been looking for a while into buying another one but the prices for 6 year old mowers a just to much to cut it up into a racer.

Running the engine like that would be right on target for keeping things low and left. keep us posted!

Well after sitting here and studying how to do the bearings on the RAGB, This is what I came up with. Thanks to jerb for postings pics of his. It really helped me in my fabrication.

After welding it to the frame it will get braced so it will not flex.

7/8" shaft I had laying around from an old mower deck. Came off of an old Massey Ferguson. Working on the third bearing mount now. Picture up in the next day or so.

Been working on it some as time allows. Started on the 3rd bearing mount.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_3dac64a1.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=3dac64a1.jpg)
Still got some bracing to do to it.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_e110dd2f.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=e110dd2f.jpg)
Built the seat mounts. Left side.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_ba09e004.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=ba09e004.jpg)
And the right side.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_2eefb94d.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=2eefb94d.jpg)
Also after getting pointer from the WOO guy's decided to move the engine back. Slide it back into the dash and was surprised that it fits with very little work.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_69cd60d8.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=69cd60d8.jpg)
A little trimming to clear the oil filter.

(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_421f132e.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=421f132e.jpg)
And not much to do on the starter side.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_93b94c1f.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=93b94c1f.jpg)
Moved it back around 6 inches. Should make it handle better and gives plenty of room for steering.

Had to work on a customers chassis, but finally got back to the supermod. Welded in the new engine plate.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_29f085fc.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=29f085fc.jpg)
Braced the 3rd bearing mount.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_7a571956.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=7a571956.jpg)
Trianglated the rear section.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_812aa25e.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=812aa25e.jpg)
And added another brace the length of the chassis.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_53b18b06.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=53b18b06.jpg)
Now it should be fairly stiff.
(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_9a51d28b.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=9a51d28b.jpg)
A look at the rear from underneath.

Tonight after the turkey dinner I will start on the steering if I have the energy. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Fabbed up steering over the holiday. Started with the steering shaft.

Then the old geometry classes kicked in and nailed it the first time. Steering from the front.

The front bearing for the shaft is from Speedway Moters. Race car steering shaft mount. Thanks for the comments. Had it on the scales last night with everything in the seat that I have for it and it is at 280lbs. Still have some more parts to make but I think it is going to be lighter than my BP.

Do you get any kind of ackerman with that set-up?
Title: Re: Supermod for 2011
Post by: fordman21 on November 29, 2010, 02:06:00 pm
Yes, that's why the tie rods are angled down to the spindles, when you are in a full turn notice that the tie rods are level and inline with each other. That makes the spread wider and gives you ackerman. This only applies to front steer set ups.

What if your pivot wasn't centered and the tie rods were drastically different lengths?

Mine still does it with unequal length tierods. i thought about making them equal length after I already welded the pivot point, but it seems to work ok so far. Find out when I drive it for sure.

Yours are close to the same though, I was talking like a 2-3 times length difference.
I am looking at redoing the steering on my CP, the pivot would be close to one side of the frame.

The biggest reason for equal length tie rods is that you only have to carry one size for replacements (spares).

The geometry will be the same, and its what has been done on all builds in the "build section" , just mounted in a different plane.

i agree, thats why i centered mine, just carry one size spare, in my opinion makes getting everything set-up easier as well!

Ditto on the tie rods... Even though I carry blank rod I can make whatever length I need, but with 7 mowers hard to carry an item for each one. But thats why I got mine equal also.

Haven't really touched this in a while but I have been collecting parts. Had a sweet rotor made. 10" to bolt to a standard brake hub. Stainless steel too.

Also had them cut me an 8" for the BP also.

10 incher for the super mod. I have a 10 from aps on my mod x and will never go back to a little one on a 16 inch tire. Lol it makes a world of a difference

Finally back on the SuperMod for a little while. Mounted a 10 inch rotor up and got the caliper mounted. Easiest one I have ever done. Drill 2 holes and done.

Made some bracing for the rear steering mount and fuel tank mount. Stuff is getting tight.

Going to have to make an access hole in the upper dash to put fuel in or make the upper dash come off with the hood. Haven't really decided yet.

Got some more done this weekend. Fabricated some nerf bars Friday night and then tossed them and started over Saturday morning. Got the main parts made.

(http://i627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/th_2bdfceb0.jpg) (http://s627.photobucket.com/albums/tt359/2nstoys/Supermod/?action=view&current=2bdfceb0.jpg)

They are not welded to the frame yet. Still have to make some more supports. Put them 1" in from the sidewalls.

Nerf Bars look nice. Are you going to do deck halves too? I decided to go with nerf bars from BMI because once I bought the metal and had it bent I'd have as much in them as the BMI one's cost. I also bought a BMI front bumper to put on but I'm not sure how I'm going to do that yet as it won't fit over my hood as the L series Deere hoods are wider than the Scotts / Sabre hoods. Also If you plan to use a front bumper do you plan to keep the factory hood hinge or go with Dzus fasteners to hold the hood on?
Title: Re: Supermod for 2011
Post by: fordman21 on January 17, 2011, 07:48:41 am
Its looking really good Glenn, coming along pretty fast too.
Justin, I usually have to spread the front bumpers a lot to make them fit around the hood, I use a little heat on them. Because everything is tight for room the Dzus fasteners are a light, simple and cheap way of mounting the hood.
I was going to try to put a deck on my new outlaw machine this year as well, trying to make it look like as much of a lawnmower as I can.
Title: Re: Supermod for 2011
Post by: 2nstoys on January 17, 2011, 07:53:44 am
Justin, I plan on making this hood lift off. The front hinge points are already gone off the frame and with the cutting of the hood to clear the front axle I will lose all the supports there anyway. Front bumper is going to intregal to the frame so no way to tilt the hood. And, yes I am going to put decks on also. Didn't like how high my knees were when I sit in it so had to find some room. Ended up lowering the front of the foot boards. Made a huge difference.

Makes the footboards level with no kickup. Much more comfortable now.

I'm trying to order DZUS fasteners for my hood but there are a ton of different ones. What works best on the plastic hoods like the deere I have? It is about 1/8 thick or a little less. I have no idea what size and length to get.
Title: Re: Supermod for 2011
Post by: Caudy155 on January 19, 2011, 10:03:56 pm
i believe the 5/8 DZUS will work justin depending on how this of material you use to mount the spring dont need much but i would reccomend the little premade spring plates that moroso sells and make brackets to hold them but really if they arent just right you can bend the spring to set the tension so really you could get just about any length you want

Do yourself a favor and if you use the dzus tabs and they are in a tight spot, use the butterfly ones. It will make your life a lot simplier in a rush.
Title: Re: Supermod for 2011
Post by: Burwell555 on January 20, 2011, 12:33:55 pm
I only use the butterfly style. No tools needed and they save paint!!! Justin when you buy tabs, just get the flat plain style like in the link i posted. They can be bent to any angle or have some round tube "kickers" welded to them and they fit ANYTHING, ANYWHERE!!

Played with the nerfbars this weekend. Got the perforated metal welded to the tubes. Ended up with a couple of 1 1/4" strips of material left. Bent it in a circle and made some modified deck halves.

Had to notch the frame for clearance. I will be reinforcing it when I take it apart next time.

Not perfectly equal length but pretty close. Tonight I will build the rectangle tube collector and some hangers.

Also going back to some of the steering questions on SAI. This shows that there is plenty and how the tie rods are almost level in a full turn. Should steer fine.

The 1 1/8" bends were off of a Intek. Then it is a bunch of pipe we found at a salvage yard. Got the collector made tonight.

I haven't decided how I'm going to do my exhaust yet. How do you plan to reinforce the frame where your pipes went through? That's a serious weak point now. I'm also trying to figure out what to do for a chain guard under the fenders on my L130 to protect the seat and the fenders.
Title: Re: Supermod for 2011
Post by: 2nstoys on January 30, 2011, 02:41:08 pm
Plan on doing it like I used to do on Stree Rod frames. Fill in the cutout area with plate steel and then reinforce the inside and outside with some more plate. I will post some pics when I do it. I did the same thing on my BP and it is holding up fine. Not sure what I will do on the seat if anything. That seat is pretty thick and I doubt the chain would come through it. Maybe just some sheet metal as a shield.

He started a new job around the first of the year and is working 70-80 hours a week so his tractor and Heymow time has come to a halt untill he gets things rolling along at his new job. Experienced manager at new dealership and you guys can figure out the rest. The only ones that are done are his BP and his daugthers JP. I will let him know you are asking though

After being at the USLMRA Sparta race and racing with the WOO guy's, I have got the itch to get this thing done. I have set a goal to have it ready to test by our next race on Aug. 6th. Then ready to race at the V-Twin shootout. Hopefully I will have some help this weekend to jam on it. Got it all tore down and finished the welding on the chassis, made some pedals and got the clutch worked out.

Finally fired the engine up last night. At first the engine wouldn't start and found no spark. Changed the coils out and it fired up. Sounds pretty good for a little engine. Don't know if I have enough for the WOO's put I will have fun trying to keep up. A couple more things to button up and it should be ready to test this weekend. More pics when it looks like I have done something.

Got it done for testing at our races on Saturday. A little clutch tweaking to do, but it drives very good. Amazing what real race tire can do. This thing pulls off the corners with some G's. Track was very bumpy from the rain delays we had, but it was very tacky, so I could at least test the belt drive. Seems to be working ok. The crowd also loved it when I was doing hot laps after the heat races. Lot's of them came over after the races and just could not believe that it was still all lawn mower. I love it. Alot of our spectators are coming up to the shootout just to see all of the supermods.

Here she is in all her glory.

Running 16-8.50. Those meats hook up great. Darn near pulling the front wheels down the straights. It ran very good for the first race. a couple little things to work out. Stiffer throttle return springs for sure. It will be right for Deleware. US Open, Bring It!

It offsets the chassis.

It provides left side weight.  Some use it to help corner on banked tracks.  It is a lot like a racing go kart.
