Briggs OHV & Vanguard / Re: Help building 31 ci briggs single

if you have a Tecumseh single it is probably not a 31ci. But what do I know, i'm not an expert on Tecumseh engines like ed and bert are.

yes, like ed said, talk to Brandon, I raced several times against him over the years in wilmra and bsmra. he has a good gp/mx-r. I have heard of using the clutch in the corner, I have never seen it done or ever have done it myself. I would not recommend it.

yes, weld the arm to the bell crank. Also it looks like the steel you used to make the pitman arms is too thin of steel. I only used 1/4" thick steel in these areas so it wouldn't flex or bend. Just my opinion.

I use to race a fiero in the local mini stock/4 cyl division up here in central wi back in 2001-2002. I guarantee that 2.5 isn't as built as what I had. Mine wouldn't idle under 1500 rpms.

A free mower is a good one to build, A MTD tunnel chassis is the most common mower that is built into a racer. There are a lot of post and pictures on here for building a MTD tunnel chassis. I am not aware of any built mowers for sale in wi right now, but there might be. I am from Spencer, WI. Welcome to mower racing.

Interesting. I may need to get one of those in the future. I had heard that it was better to have the gear set in the center of the trans case rather than on the end of the shafts. Have you had any failures with this set up?

So it would be having one gear set on the shift shaft and counter shaft(25-25), and where all the other gears were would be peerless 700 spacers in its place?

What would make the difference in how it rolls? Bearing quality? or just the shaft diameter itself? First build so just tring to under stand.

If it rolls hard it takes more horsepower to turn the tires= slower speed= being less competitive=worse finishing spot= not as much fun. Get good quality bearings. I recommend using the 1 1/4" axle with the free spin bearings, and it is no lie the bearings are free spin. I am not aware of any 3/4" free spin bearings. I can push my race mower with 1 finger using little effort in doing so.

Keep in mind, what ever axle you use make sure it is as free turning as possible. My old race mower had a 1" axle and when I built my new mower I went to a 1 1/4". It is a night and day difference in how free it rolls with the 1 1/4". It will almost roll out of the garage on its own.

Driveline / Re: need gear ratio help
« on: October 12, 2014, 10:07:34 am »
Gear ratio needed would depend on how long the straightaways are on the track your going to be racing. I have found anywhere between a 4.30 to 1 and a 6.5 to 1 ratio(final drive ratio) worked for me. How ever I was using a governed engine, a 700 and a live axle set up. 4.30 to 1 for around 200ft straight and 6.5 to one 1 with a 90-100ft straight. With a transaxle, not sure how you can get in those ratio ranges using a jack shaft. Sorry that is as much help as I can be. I hope some of this helps."

ok, I just looked on youtube for rototiller racing. It is an actual thing. if I knew how to link this to what I found on youtube all of you would get a good laugh. I about fell over laughing so hard. I didn't see any "husky" racing rototiller operators.

What? what? sprockets? jackshaft? are you running a transmission to a live axle or a jackshaft to a transaxle set up. if it is a 700 trans to a live axle setup then go to the ec technical site and use the mower speed calculator. very useful and accurate.

No. It would be forced to run on a liquified pig manure surface due to using antiquated technology. And then we would throw rotten vegetables at you, old school style. Just for fun.

And, Bert, it was not directed at you, but I would not consider a person such as myself "husky" unless I was referring to myself vs. Fong...

Perhaps thats why I am so big in Japan?

Old school. awesome! But that weight break would be useful for all those "husky" people. Can the flat head engine operators use cleated shoes in that liquefied pig manure, or is that too much of a traction advantage?
