Driveline / BP Pulley/Sprocket Ratios
« on: September 09, 2014, 07:56:03 pm »
Hey guys,

Over the winter Im building my Race Mower to speeds similar to a BP Im guessing.. I want to get a top speed around 50 MPH. My Race association has some different class names and specs so Im trying to get a sense of how fast I want it. Im going to run a Peerless 717 Transmission to a Live Axle, with 13" Rear Tires. Let me know what you think because Im not sure how to gear this set up to get 50 MPH in 4th gear (4 speed trans.) Im also running a 17hp Briggs OHV single with an EC Carb on it.

Any help would be great!

Nico

Hey guys,

I have come to the conclusion that I need to externally vent my 17hp Briggs single OHV carb and was wondering if you guys have any pics or vids tht might help me do it, I get the concept and how to do it but Im having trouble picturing where the stock brass peice is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nico

Thanks for the reply I have unhooked the governor it still bogs down but I can disengage the clutch and rev it up and let the clutch out and it does good anyway I'm running an 8hp briggs with a 4 1/2 pulley on motor and a 3 on tranny

Okay - if it works for you than awesome!

Im building a racer out of the same mower, I have an 11 HP Briggs and a 5 speed 801 peerless. How did you lower your front end? Thanks, Nico

Briggs Flathead / Re: Briggs 11HP Flathead Governor

Ok???    So why would you want to limit RPM's?

Using a throttle stop will significantly reduce power.   A engine with a governor running the same RPM's will have more power because the governor allows the carb to fully open then close down as desired RPM's are achieved.

The only reason I asked was because Im rnot running through the oil slinger arm, just straight to the carb. and i have a stock motor. Thanks for the info!

It won't work on a racing mower.   If your running a governed class you need a governor.

Learn how the stock governor works and you will understand.

I already know how a stock governor works, and im not running in a governed class so i think i might be fine?? Thanks

First question.   Why?

Because the stock governor was messed up and it wasn't something I wanted to get into that much, I also wanted some adjustability in how high I can rev it.
No it won't work.  If you need a governor fix it.  A throttle stop won't limit your rpm's.

But it would stop the motor from reving wide open, right? I have tried this on a different mower and it worked fine.

You will get no respect from here if you run a 3/4 transaxle, but I am here to tell ya'll that it will work.  I have never ran a chain !!  I have won a national in oil city La in 2012 beside the bragging list lunder my profile.  I can only help you with the 206.  I'm building a FXS with same.  I am not saying this is the way to go, but you can make it work.

Okay thanks! Ill be running my 801 which has bearings in it already  - After this season i will go from the 801 to a MST because i like the oil filled aspect of them. I personally like transaxles better too because its a simpler and in my opinion a stronger design. Thanks

The problem with a MST 206 i have is that the shifting shaft that your linkage usually hooks up to is seized or stuck, I can shift gears with a rubber hammer and thats it. Any ideas?

Briggs Flathead / Briggs 11HP Flathead Governor
« on: May 22, 2014, 04:51:41 pm »
I have a 11 HP Briggs on my racing mower right now and have set up a system to bypass my governor, Soon im gonna make a adjustable rod or stop to limit the amount the carb butterfly on the ouside of the carb can rotate, in a way acting like a governor. Any thoughts? Thanks

You could have to high of a pulley ratio for the motor - when the ratio is too high it will bog down or even not respond at all to the throttle, because the engine might be too small for the ratio. You can get a bigger engine, or downsize your pulleys, or you could take the governor off to get some higher RPM's

Hp ratings mean nothing, it's all in the jetting.
Owen
Okay thanks. So I could put a 10.5 carb on an 11 HP and jet it to get more power?

Of all the reading I have seen on here about transaxles the only ones that are good for racing are peerless 820 and 600 series. Some racers use these. Most racers use a 700 series transmission and live axle set up.

Okay, thanks for the advice! I will probably upgrade later in the season to a 600 series.

Newcomers / NewComer Tips?
« on: April 26, 2014, 09:52:57 am »
Hi, I've been building mowers for a while, and know my way around an engine but am just starting to build a racing mower. Its a 1984 Wheel Horse 211-5 that I have lowered, and pulley swapped. I am going to put a bigger carb, upgrade the steering system, and do much more. Any tips that you guys would give me??

Thanks,
Nico

I have a Peerless 801 transaxle that is currently in my racing mower but don't really know if its a good transaxle to race with. I also have an MST 206 that can be repaired. Which is better for racing??

Thanks,
Mud Machine

I'm building a Wheel Horse Racing Mower and the carb on it's 11 HP Briggs is junk. I am going to replace it, but got thinking and am wondering if I could get more power out of it with a bigger carb. I have a 10.5 HP carb sitting around but I'm hesitant to put it on because I would lose 1/2 of a HP. Any ideas?
