Kohler Engines / Re: questions about a 19hp comand v-twin
« on: October 31, 2007, 09:51:22 am »
thanks for the input I took the eng apart and was really impressed by what Ifound it,s a really nice piece the alt already took it self off for some reason the the magnets came off the fly wheel and ate everything no big deal wasn't going to use that anyway I'm going to remove gov. and reseal the eng and leave it alone I did question the plastic oil pump drive kind of scary for higher rpms but the rest was nice the lifters look just like small block chevy parts does anyone know the comp. ratio of this eng. ? thanks again

Kohler Engines / questions about a 19hp comand v-twin
« on: October 27, 2007, 05:24:38 pm »
I started working on a comand 19hp twin this afternoon I haven't worked on a kohler before and had a few questions maybe someone could help with on the shroud thers an aluminum block with three wires running to it is this a voltage reg? also is it normal for the lifters to tap at first startup? it's been a while since it ran. also does anyone remove the gov. for racing or should I leave it hooked up? and what rpm. do guys run these eng. at? thanks for looking at all these questions hope you guys don't mind answering

If you tell them what your application is they should have the spec sheats for the individual compounds. the specs are well put together including temp/load /rpm andquantitys for dia.and shape of bearings. Kluber is a german high perf. grease used in all kinds of applications. we use it in the hubs of our endurance cars at work.

if you have a bearing supply shop around your area check with them. I forget the name of the place I get it from but it's thru my work so I'll send you the name and the compound on monday. they make different greases for different applications the stuff I use is the mix recomended for ceramic bearings. the conditions you race in will dictate how often you should maintain your bearings. where we race it has a tendency to get really dusty so I do it more often. ( probably more often then I need to)

cool I know it's only 20$ but i'm not in the buisness of wasting money and they were steel gears and they show no signs of wear so that was a double bonus what about the torrington bearing under the input gear do you reuse that with gear lube? just wondering if it likes the grease better? all the other ones(except these three ) I have don't use this bearing just a hardened washer. I'm starting to think these are a newer generation of trans correct me if i'm wrong all these mods seem like benefits. also what about the course splines for durability it seems like the dia. is pretty small for a twin cyl?

I figured EC would have the answer for the splines. the drive gears on the main and lay shaft have hole machined in them. I hadn't seen that before and am wondering if anyone has broke them?

I think everyone will agree if you get friction out of the chassis you make hp. the guys I work with who race carts use NTN ultra free rolling bearings (46$for two= expensive)the rollers them selves are a different material but thats not the gain someone else pointed it out most of it is in the seals causing friction the guys spending the big bucks in karting use oil bath cassettes to reduce the friction and to keep the bearing cool I use the mid grade free rolling bearings and clean them after every race and replace the grease with Kluber it's hard to find but worth the money the bearings roll like oil lubed but the grease is like a std. grease I've reused the seals all season and if your careful you won't hurt them

Iposted some pics in the coffee shop about the purchase I made this afternoon. I got three 700's from this lawnmower shop for what I thought was a good deal (20$) when I got home I took one apart and there was some things I hadn't seen before ti had a torrington bearing under the input gear and the gear was shorter than the other ones I have also the main shaft had four shfit keys and the splins on the output shaft where course approx ten splines vs. the fine splines I'm used to and also some of the gears had lightening holes in them so what is this box? is it just newer and updated? or is it some kind of heavy/light duty g-box? the input and bevel gear are steel and everything looks really nice but it's all different then what I'm used to. also sorry about the pic. quality all I have right now is my cell phone to take pics

I posted a question in the coffe shop comparing a 19hp vtwin kohler to a 18hp opposed briggs flathead I figured I should ask the guys using kohler eng. what they think of kohler vtwins. I'm looking for opinions on quality durabuility raceability and any other experience with these eng. the briggs is a direct boltin to my mower but the kohler would require some mods to my chassis so before I go thru with all the work I'd like to here what everyone thinks thanks guys I really appreciate the opinions
