Briggs Flathead / Briggs 8 hp
« on: February 06, 2007, 07:36:49 pm »
My friend has this old snapper that he duznt want and it has a 8 hp Briggs. If i get it, i was thinking about putting that engine in my ATLM. Since I'm gonna have the ATLM with slight pulley mods, and I'm really not heavy, at all, will this motor be able to carry me and the mower it self. I do have that Kohler 15.5 hp, but theres just to many things to go wrong on it. I do NOT want to be 5 miles alway from home in the middle of the woods on a broken down mower. I can use that 15.5 for other things. I like the 8 hp because theres nothing really to it, just a plain and simple motor. They seem to have great power for stock mowers but i just don't know for woods. I know that utilityrider uses one and he said it works great. I also know that the 10 hp's pull just like the 12hp's. So the 8 cant be that far behind in power. So what are your opinions. I really really really really rather not ruin my 15.5 so i much rather use the 8 hp. Thanks John

NOTE TO ADMINS: I'm keeping this one topic, not 50 million on the same question like last time  ;)

Briggs Flathead / Flat head trouble
« on: January 25, 2007, 07:16:14 pm »
As you all know, i just bought a mini bike. It came with a 3 hp horizontal Briggs and Stratton engine. Well any ways, since I'm gonna complete restore the bike, i have to take the motor out and get it running good and cleaned up. So i get it out of the frame and take the head off. I notice that there were a bunch of dings in the head and on top of the piston. Almost looks like some one went in there with a hammer and a screw driver and start beating it all over the place. The cylinder wall has a couple scratches that are a little deep. My guess is that some one rode it with know air filter and a rock or something got in the carb and it to the engine. But this engine was running last night when i went out for a drive yesterday. It still has compression. Will i be alright running it like this? I can probably fix the head when it gets shaved. Is it possible to shave the top of a position?, wouldn't that give it more compression since the rings would be closer to the head? The only pic i got was this one

ill have to get better pics when i get home tomarrow because you cant really see any damage...

PS. since George for forbidded me to put my mini bike in the Other Interesting Builds Section  :eyebrow: :mad2: :hmmm: :grumpy: ::censored:: >:(

....You can just visit the build at http://www.oldminibikes.com/forum/showthread.php?t=289

But back to the Briggs motor, any of you have any answers

Briggs Flathead / 3 hp flat head briggs
« on: January 22, 2007, 05:58:55 pm »
As you all know, i got a mini bike for free. It has a good running 3 hp Briggs in it. Would it be alright shaving the head on it? are there any places where I can buy cams? In general, what are some cheap ways of getting some power out of it? And of course this will all be done once i get the brakes, throttle, paint and kill switch all fixed. Thank's John

PS i will get the model # in the next hour or so....

Driveline / 600 vs 900 for street mower
« on: January 19, 2007, 11:35:15 pm »
Alright, heres the problem, i cant decide which is better. I'm building a off road mower and a street mower. There is a huge huge huge huge buissness park up the street from my house that goes on for quite a few miles. I have have a pefectly working 6 speed peerless 900 in a MTD craftsman frame. I'm thinking about putting the 600 in the woods mower and the 900 in the street mower. I much rather have the 600 in the woods mower becuase that has been the plans for it, and i know that its a very very tough tranny and will not let me down when im at the powerlines 2 miles alway from home. What do you guys think i should do?

Heres the 900

and heres the 600

Driveline / Even more 600 question's
« on: January 15, 2007, 05:51:00 pm »
I herd it was a good idea to put a greese zirk on the input shaft casing. Bringing this up made me think about putting greese zirk's on the axle casing peices as well.

Will this help or no? dose gear oil flow inside there? Becuase when i took it off it was bone dry with nothing lubricating the bearing inside of them  Thank's John

Chassis / Can solenoid's handle water???
« on: January 14, 2007, 02:37:19 pm »
As you all know, I'm building my off road mower right now and since I'm gonna be driving threw really deep water and such, i was wondering if you can brake a solenoid if it goes under water or if it gets excessively wet. Mine is located down low as you can see in the pic below. So I'm thinking about putting the solenoid up higher, like maybe on the other side of the dash. But it all depends on if they can handle water because i rather not spend money on wire if i don't have to. Thank's John
