Briggs Flathead / Un-Identified piston and rod
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:04:27 pm »
Hey all,

Just pulled apart a 28ci flatty and found a different (not-briggs) looking connecting rod and different piston.  The rod has a much smoother texture and sharper edges than a briggs rod and has a part number cast on it that says K-1011.(and a logo that has arrrows pointing oposite directions)   The piston is not stock briggs either, it is stock size, but marked YCP.  Anyone know what these parts are?  Performance? Cheap Aftermarket?

Briggs Flathead / 28ci best stock parts
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:29:36 pm »
I am planning to rebuild my 28ci flatty before our season starts.  Quick hone, rings, and a valve job.  I am running stock class and can not have any mods or non 28 parts.  I see there are many different part #'s for pistons and rings by date code, and some rings are listed as chrome, some are not.  Will all the different stock bore rings fit the stock pistons?  and is there an "Ideal" piston and ring combo to use?   Are some stock pistons or rings better than others? Thanks,

Briggs Flathead / To oil or not to oil?
« on: September 18, 2010, 01:27:47 pm »
Hi,

this may be a dumb question, but with the EC air filters, after cleaning them should you oil them with a filter oil (like K&N oil) or run them dry?

Driveline / Where to buy #40 sprockets?
« on: August 09, 2010, 10:54:46 pm »
Hi all,

I am running #40 chain and need to find a 45T split sprocket.  I got my 44T from APS Karting before, but they are sold out of the 45T.  Does anyone know where else I can find split sprockets for #40 chain?  Everyone else seems to only sell #35.  Thanks,

Briggs Flathead / Flathead stock timing
« on: July 07, 2010, 12:43:57 pm »
Hi all,

does anyone know where the ignition timing is set from the factory on a stock flathead, stock key?  A friend and I were bench racing, talking horsepower, and wondered if advancing timing on a stock flathead would provide a measurable performance gain.  Were assuming briggs doesnt run much advance, but dont know for sure.      I dont have a degree wheel or any desire to take apart my good runnning stock motor to find out.

Driveline / 700 steel gears or cast gears
« on: June 11, 2010, 08:19:21 am »
Hi all,

dissassembling a couple 700's and it got me thinkning.  If what is inside is not original (or not known), how do you tell the difference between the steel gears and the cast  input gears?  I havent seen any numbers or anything on the gears.  Does anyone have pics of both to compare?

Briggs Flathead / 28ci EC Filter Adaptors
« on: March 18, 2010, 10:52:39 pm »
I am running a 28ci flathead with a walbro carb in the stock class.  I see it looks like the filter adaptor I would need is part # 316 for the model 28, but does anyone know which of the universal filters fits this adaptor, or fits the best on this motor?

Also I  would like to run an adjustable main jet, part # 100-506 I believe.  If I remember correctly, my carb does not have a main jet on the side, inside the bowl, but rather the tube is the jet.  Does anyone know what size I would have to drill that jet out to, so it would work properly with the needle?

Thanks,

Chassis / Steering arm and Tie rod placement for Ackerman
« on: November 06, 2009, 12:59:07 pm »
Hey guys,

my question is really geared more to George, but maybe someone else can help too.  I am building a racer very similar to Georges 07 MTD build, I am trying to figure out how to place my steering arms for proper ackerman, I see on George's build he runs a front tie rod, yet the steering arms appear to angle inward, which should create a negative ackerman affect (outside tire turning sharper :omg:).  Is this just an illusion, or do you run this way for a reason?  Does a racer want a true ackerman, or something else?

I am building an axle with adjustable heims that will have 10* Caster, 10* KPI, and 100* L spindles (to bring my initial camber to 0 with the KPI figured in).
Also, if the steering arms do angle in, at which angle to they?
Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Tires / Tire width vs Rim width
« on: October 29, 2009, 10:32:26 pm »
Hey all,

I am just building my first racer, and am looking at rims/tires.  I am planning on running 13X6.50X6 tires all around, and am planning 6.5X6 rims.  I see some people use wider rims than the tire is rated for, is there some kind of better handling/traction to be gained by running wider rims than your tires?  Should I be looking at the 7.25X6 rims instead?  Any input will be appreciated,

Briggs Flathead / Briggs Flathead 10HP vs 12HP vs 12.5HP differences?
« on: October 04, 2009, 10:17:56 pm »
Hi all,

I am trying to put together my first racer, and need some info about the engine. I have a Briggs 10HP IC engine, model 256707, but I am planning to run in a 12.5HP class.  I am thinking of looking for a 12.5 HP engine, but is my 10HP engine basically the same as a 12 or 12.5 HP?  I thought I read somewhere that they share the same bore and stroke.  Could I just make a few changes to my 10HP and basically have a 12HP?  Any help in pointing out the differences would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks,

-Samo
