Title: Getting more torque out of GX200?
Post by: Troybilt Pony on December 05, 2013, 09:59:33 pm
Hey guys, I'm building a work tractor for around the yard out of a MTD Seven Hundred. I'm not looking for rpms, therefore its staying governed. I'm looking for bottom end torque, grunt, power, whatever. I know you can do some work with the cam and such. Trying to keep the engine on a 250 dollar budget since its just a side project.
Here she is, bone stock, starts 1-2 pulls.
When I got it w. the 7hp flatty that has seen better days,

After swap,

Thanks, TBP

Woohoo! Here I am...

What make you think it needs anymore than what it already has?
I've been repowering tractors (to use as tractors) for years. I have a John Deere 70 that I made into a row-crop tractor with a center mount cultivator. It is repowered with a 7hp briggs vertical shaft engine from a power washer. Has plenty of power. I have cultivated acres of corn with it. Very good on gas too.

We are developing a lawn tractor pulling series as well in PA. I have a prototype JD 70 puller built now. We have done some testing with it on a transfer. The GX200 it has is just a stocker for now but ran fine in testing, traction ran out before power did.

Some very easy mods that can be done lo buck,  have the head milled .100 . To make it right though you should get shorter push rods and then put in an offset flywheel key to advance ignition 3 degrees.  Several places to get the pushrods try ARC, Parsons Racing etc.  Ask them what ideas they have also.  Should have about $125 or less in it.

Hey guys, I got a old MTD 700 tractor here I'm making into an around the house work tractor. I'm wondering how you make more torque with these as I'm more of a briggs builder. It'll be governed so I assume no need for billet rod and flywheel?? I just want more low end power.
Here she is atm,

Thank You for the input, I'm going to be putting larger tires on this for down in the woods (only 21" quad tires)  And am gonna be pulling firewood up and down my hill. Thats why I am wanting more so I dont have to work it hard to do stuff. This is out of a pressure washer as well.
