thats a good question old goat, been wondering that myself, i dont see running a ragb any less effecient than running a jackshaft, and vertical engines are so much easier to find as well as cheaper, if i dont find a horizontal soon i will be using a ragb on mine as well....

I would think the center of gravity is all ready lower on a vertical shaft motor, versus a horizontal shaft motor. So raising the vert. motor 3/4" it would still probably have a lower C/G than a horizontal? The one thing I was wondering is how much power do you loose going through a 90 degree box? Is it worth going out and buying a horizontal shaft motor if you already have a vertical shaft motor?

Well I don't think that there is any more loss of HP thru the ragb than there is over the sideshaft going thru the jackshaft. it all robs hp to some extent. My biggest issue right now is carbs and issues. After tearing the carbs down yesterday I found all kinds of shavings in the jets from drilling the vents out Friday night at the All American in the dark. Its running right again but tires is still my down fall since I cannot put it to the ground as well as someone with the good dirt tires, that will equalize on some tracks and be a down fall on others. As for the center of gravity, mine is as low or lower than one with a side shaft. Thats not why I went with it, I did it cause I had it and wanted to be different. Once its dialed in and carbs are right asnd tires are hooking up it will be as fast as any even if doubted by some. I am having fun driving the thing. Gonna build a single over this winter using a 13 hp 390 motor. It will be a hot stock nothing fancy. That one will use a jack shaft BUT its a matter of having the motor already OR it would be a vertical too.

The vanguard guys prefer the horizontal engines mostly because of the oiling system, and the crank shaft is 1.25" shorter/lighter and they have ball bearings on the pto side compared to the bushing in the pan of the verticals. The other advantage is that you can offset the engines a bit more,  building headers isn't as hard and usually there is more room for carburetors too.
You can make any engine work, I don't think there is any more loss of hp through a RAGB than a good jackshaft set up its self, but the chain drive might be a bit more efficient over a hot belt, I'm sure the difference is minimal.
I glad to see more interest in the supermod class.
George your new supermod is a real nice looking machine.

Thanks Ryan even though its not finished it does impress quite a few. First question asked is why a vertical motor. But regardless it gets the job done and I am happy with it. Its no different than any other new machine, gotta work the bugs out. Even though this one does not have as many as some I have built. LOL

Here it is compliments of Arron Turner in action running bad too, but still getting the job done.

George, my son (who is only 1) and I watch these videos of your super mod everyday. He goes to the computer and points and grunts at it and I know what he wants. I can't wait to show him this new video. Keep up the good work

George, im doing a steering setup similiar to yours to avoid buying expensive u-joints, my question i notice your steering shaft is at a bit of an angle to make it to the center of the axle, do you think keeping the steering shaft straight would cause any problems, i realize the up and down shaft that connects the steering shaft to the bell-crank would not be straight up and down, but would this cause any issues...thanks

No I doubt it. Look at the angles of a standard box frame when you come off the bottom of the steering column to the left front spindle arm. Its also at an agnle and wroks great. Same principle so it should not matter
