I am going to go lawnmower hunting soon. I want to know what type of tranny to look for and how to ID it. Also, can someone tell me how to tell the difference between a hydrostatic tranny and just a standard one. I don't want to end up with a mower I can't really do anything to.

look for a 700 peerless or a 820 peerless (right squidd ;) )
check here for a picture
a hydro will be very detectable as it will either have a foot speed controller or a lever that controlls speed

Depends on the class..if IMOW, then a solid 600 H pattern Transaxle is a good set up...

Otherwise find the "chassis" you want to run and then you will most likely have to look for a "second", rear engine mower to get the 700 from.

Some front engines have them, but finding the "perfect" chassis AND a 700 in it will be tough...

What about a "non" H pattern trans axel? like the ones with the shifters on the side?

So basically a hydrostatic is any mower with a speed lever and I should be looking for ones with a gearshift?
