Thank you Paul. The tires are being mounted today. I am using golf cart rims for now. Had to keep the cost down till I get used to racing. But I do have a powder coat setup in my shop and I will make them look as good as posible. I have the bearings, flangetts, bolts, axle and wheel hubs ready to go on. I just wanted to make sure that I drilled the hole for everything in the right place the first time.

Thank you so very much.

Now I'm not taking any requests for welding demostrations,  HaHa

But here is how the axle was mounted. I used a second sheet of steel to back up the side of the "box frame" where it went through the frame. Had to put the flangettes on the outside of the frame. They have a greese fitting in them and they will be easier to greese like this.

The angle iron is old bed railing. Had to use what I had. It runs all the way frome the back up to where the front axle will be mounted. It is all bolted into place until I decide that is exatly where I want it.

Do Ya'll think that this is discreet enough? Do you think it will be strong enough?

Hey, your welding looks a LOT like mine!  Not very pretty, but they hold.

Bed railing eh?  Same thing I used!!!!    Since I found it laying out back in the pile, it was PERFECT.

Dale, currently on hold.....

Hey Skeeter,  I just now stumbled on to you build thread. I am part of K&G racing up here in Jonesboro (Arkansas) We have built many Craftsman Mowers,  if you need any help or have any questions, we would be more than happy to help. The picture of the blue mower from the Hope race is my buddy Carl's mower, mine was the white one (402). We have a race @ Dierks AR this saturday 8/5/06, you should come up and visit !

Hi Dave, Thank you so very much for the assistance offer. I will need it. I have already got the lawn chairs in the car for the Dierks race. You may remember Darrell Oz. He purchased a mower when ya'll were in Hope. Well he is going to race in Dierks. I have serveral pictures of your white mower. If you want I will make you some copies and bring them with me to Dierks. Your white mower is what I'm trying to build. I spoke with you when ya'll were in Hope. Let me know about the pictures and I will see ya'll in Dierks.

Learned something and thought I would pass it on.

On a Craftsman mower there is a difference between the different models in reference to the rear back plate.

One is longer than the other. This allows more room for the sprocket and or disk brake on a live axle type set up.

The back plate that is held up by the finger is the original one that was on my frame. The other one is off of my "parts" frame.

See picture below.

There was a package setting on my desk when I got back from lunch today. Guess what I get to do when I get home tonight?!

These are the 7.25" X 6" Douglas rims that I ordered from A.P.S. on Monday of this week. Talk about quick service. (thanks George for the info about these wheels)

Now, which side goes to the outside? The one with the valve stem or without the valve stem? The valve stem side is the deeper side.

The difference in offset will affect your overall width.  So the question is, which way will give you the width you're looking for?   There's your answer.

Very unlikely you will get spindles and hubs to fit in the deeper side and still clear steering arms...
