OK here is a shot of the frame all stripped down. I took it to the car wash and with a little help from some "Super Clean" blasted away all of the dirt and grime that was under the bottom of the frame. Had to get it clean so when I went to welding on it there would be no fire.

I'm going to use a peerless and a straight axle.

Skeeter. When you start cutting and welding to mount up your trans and axel, could you please share pics with us on how you did it?  My chassis is similar to yours and I am considering doing the peerless/axel conversation.

Thanks!!

Yep, I will post pictures. I will take them one step at a time and maybe those that have done this before will tell me when I goof up. :D

Up-Date time :D

I welded the holes in the frame to give it more strength. Then set the rear fender and bolted on the foot boards. This was done to size stuff up.

I don't think I welded up any usefull holes. Some of them were big and needed extra metal cut and welded in to fill them properly.

The frame is setting on 2 X 4's to give me the height I needed to place the solid 1" axle. I placed the 16X7.50-8 Carlisle Turfmaster tire under the wheel well with an approximate 7/8" clearance between the edge of the wheel well and the tire, the frame became 6 3/4" off of the table. My question is.....

Shouldn't the frame be as close to the ground as possible in accordance with the 4" rules? If so, then how do I get the frame down by at least 2 more inches without cutting the fenders. I know the mower needs to look like a mower and I don't want to cut the fenders. I thought about rasing the fenders up but that rases the seat up too. To me this would defeat the purpose of lowering the frame.

See photos below.

If I leave the frame up at 6 3/4" off of the table the axle will just barely attach to the frame.

This is the measurements that I took on the frame for the location of the center of the 1' axle. If anyone has done this before would you measure the placement of your rear axle and post it for me?

You might not be able to see my measurements written on the frame but it is 7 1/4" down from the top of the frame and 4 1/2" from the back. The three holes that are seen in the photo are where the orginal steel was bolted on that held the tranaxle.

Thank you

Have you thought about making a plate to hold the axel and bearings in? I think that way your rear end could be more solid and you could get your measurements the way you want them…

When the guys came to my home town, Hope, to race I took this picture. It is a Craftsman mower like mine.
The photo showes the location of the rear axle but when I measured it up it did not allow for the tire clearing the fender.
I don't know what this guy did to get it to work.

Any ideas?

I looked at g-team racing web site and they have really good pictures of the frame but the fenders are not on the chassis.

Skeeter,
Paul here, with the red craftsman.
yes the tires are 16-7.5-8 on a 8x8 rim.
The pic you have your axle marked on the side is exactly where I put mine.  But I measured with 16-6.5 tires then switched to the 7.5's after I got it built.  Thought they looked better on the 8 inch rim.  But I got lucky and they fit----barely, I had to roll the lip on the fender under so it wouldn't cut the tire.
My advice is to get your tires mounted and put your axle together and measure from there.  You are right you will never get 4 inches ground clearance with that mower with those tires.  You can't modify the fenders, only move them discreetly, which I did. I jacked the fenders up in the back about 1/4 inch this made a big difference on ride hight.  But you need to have the tires mounted  so you know what shape they will be.  Hope this helps
