Anyone Built a Snapper?
« on: December 31, 2008, 05:49:43 pm »
I used to be into redneck tractor modification in highschool and now i'm thinking of making up one to use as a small ATV/push truck in the pits for our race car. My first plan is to take the deck off and cut the center tube down to shorten the frame (i did this before to one).

My main concern is how to make it faster. I know they have wacky drive systems. I just never modified the drive system on one. I only want to make it go maybe 10-15mph top speed.

Thanks for the ideas
Brian

About the only thing you can do is adjust the shifter , The plate is slottled so you can more your gears around to keep from wearing the friction disc.

the fastest snapper i have ever seen ran one time with us and i think he switched the friction disc's around. it was fast down the straits but couldnt turn... and good luck with your snapper!!!!

might just try putting a jackshaft to double your speed or best thing i could recommend is put in a shiftable transmission and change pullies. sounds like a lot of work but probably most durable at double stock speed.

scrap the stock drive get a horizontal engine with a centrifical clutch and put a kart axle in it that is the best way to do a snapper dont forget the chain guard

Im really trying not to have to modify it a whole lot. I was hoping there was some easy trick to just get a little more speed out of it in high gear. A bigger engine plate/pulley would be best i guess but i guess they dont make them.

The horizontal engine/kart axle is out of the question because of the huge amount of fab needed. Plus a centrifugal clutch will just not work pushing an 800lb car around.

I also thought of a Snapper because they are so small and wont take up much room in the trailer. The one i mentioned before i had chopped 18" from the frame tube making the whole thing about 4ft long. It had about zero turning radius and did wheelies like crazy.

i dont think the friction disc drive will be capable of pushing either  esspecally if it is worn
