2009 Racing Season

To:      2009 USLMRA Members

From:  Brooke Highline - Vice President of Administration

Re:      2009 Membership Kit and Welcome to New Members

Welcome to the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association, home of the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series and “Mow Central” for more than 120 sanctioned races and 32 Local Chapters and Affiliated Clubs.

Please note: The USLMRA membership dues are VALID from Labor Day to Labor Day.  Your 2009 USLMRA racing dues will expire September 7, 2009.

Membership Cards: This year’s membership card features the USLMRA 2008 Driver of the Year Mr. James Mikula (MILMRA). Jim was voted by his racing peers to receive the 2008 USLMRA Driver of the Year Award, which was presented to him during the 2008 STA-BIL Nationals Weekend in Delaware, OH.  Jim will also be featured on the cover of the 2009 Membership Card and Cutting Edge yearbook.

Also, congratulations to our 2008 Most Improved Driver of the Year, Jason Brown (DelMarVa – MD), JP Rookie of the Year Christian “Squirrel” Jones (DelMarVa – MD), Adult Rookie of the Year Kurtis Ast (FLA-NASGRASS), 4th annual Dave Hertel “Mowtivation” Award winner, Pat Sullivan (FLA-NASGRASS), 2nd annual Charles Powell “Mr. Mowjangles” Award, Jim Witt (FLA) and 2nd annual Dubba G. “Every Man” Award, Al “Lawn Monkey” Minaker (WILMRA).

Race Day Registration: The 2009 USLMRA membership card or the receipt from registering online must be presented at race day registration to prove current membership in order to participate in all race day events.

USLMRA Insurance Policy: Remember a very important benefit of joining the USLMRA is our excellent insurance program with National Karting Alliance (NKA). ALL USLMRA racers are covered under our insurance policy.  We are thankful to have the best insurance policy available to the racing community, remember that enforcing SAFETY rules and guidelines is the USLMRA’s #1 priority.

Qualifying for 2009 Nationals: All USLMRA racers must qualify by racing class for the STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals (Nationals) and Challenge of Champions.  The STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals (formerly referred to as the STA-BIL Nationals), is not an open race. Participants must qualify by class competing in a minimum of two (2) 2009 USLMRA STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series (aka US National Points) races.  NOTE: To compete means to complete at least one race lap under power.

Yahoo Group Site and www.uslmra.com: The USLMRA strongly encourages you to join our FREE Yahoo Group Site and Member Forum so you can stay up-to-the-minute on day-to-day USLMRA happenings such as Tech and Build issues, media activities, schedule updates, point standings, venue reports and related matters.  These sites are the official correspondence channels of the USLMRA.  Visit www.letsmow.com to join the Yahoo Group site or www.uslmra.com to join the Member Forum.

USLMRA Rule Book:  The 2009 USLMRA Official Rule Book is available to download online at www.letsmow.com under the official rules section.  If you are in the process of building, please make sure to read the rule book front to back as well as asking build and technical questions on our FREE Yahoo Group site and on our Member Forum at www.uslmra.com

The following changes were made to the 2009 rule book. It is apparent that all members do not read the rule book completely and that they only read the specific areas for the class they run in.

These areas are:

Section II RULES OF THE PITS & GRID

K) No pets are allowed on the racing course. Pets in the pits must remain on a leash and owners are responsible for cleaning up after their pets

Section III Driver Eligibility:

B. Drivers must be at least 18 years of age. Drivers 16 and 17 years of age may compete with an approved parent’s consent form on file with the Race Day Chief Steward at each event. For JP drivers A Parental Consent form can be filled out by a parent or legal guardian prior to the event.  However, it must be an original, and it must be notarized.  Note that this applies to the first time you race at a facility.  Once one is signed for a particular facility, it is good for the year.

Section IV. DRIVER SAFETY EQUIPMENT

F) An approved, racing neck support is MANDATORY in JP, IMOW, Prepared and FX.

Section VI. TECHNICAL INSPECTION

A) Every mower entered in any USLMRA event must be approved for competition by Technical Inspection before practicing or racing at any event. A Safety Tech/Build Tech sticker will be issued at each race. Top five finishing machines may be required to go directly from the track to the impound area (when provided), and be inspected for Build Tech compliance. Failure to impound directly from

the track may be cause for automatic disqualification and loss of points. All JP’s & IMOW’S will remain on track for RPM & Air Pressure check Inspection after feature races. JP & IMOW racers may be required to check gear ratio compliance as a group, participation is mandatory.

Section VII. GENERAL MOWER REQUIREMENTS

Handlebar type grips may not be added to steering wheels in any class.

Section VIII. RACING CLASSIFICATIONS

E) FACTORY EXPERIMENTAL

16) Handle bar type grips can not be added to steering wheels!

USLMRA Points Structure:

If a Yellow or Red flag is thrown before the lead mower completes the first lap, the race will be restarted but only once, if a second yellow/red flag is thrown before completion of the first lap, the race order will be determined by the order the mowers crossed the Start/Finish line at the start.

In as much as the USLMRA works towards preserving the appearance of the lawnmowers to be that of a lawnmower and with the handlebars being an addition that most obviously identified as not close to an original lawnmower design and the potential for the handlebars being a safety concern by their protrusion, the USLMRA feels that it is best served in fairness, appearance and safety that the use of handlebars on any race lawnmower be discontinued.

USLMRA Local Chapters: The USLMRA Local Chapter system continues to offer racing at fairs, festivals, municipalities, race tracks and similar venues nationwide.  The best formula for success when forming an LC is creating an organized structure (local board) with other mower racing enthusiasts to help you.

New LC(s) must pay a one-time fee of $100.00 and sign the LC Charter. Receiving the comprehensive USLMRA Lawn Mower Racing Operations Manual is included in this fee. As a new LC you are agreeing to abide by and enforce the USLMRA building and safety rules. You are also agreeing to require all of your LC members to join USLMRA.  As part of our dual membership program, your LC would be rebated part of this fee, when and if you have an actual organized structure. This is made clearer in the LC Charter. One of the benefits to you, with all of your members being USLMRA members, is that their personal and racing information is being kept on an USLMRA database. This information is available to the LC(s) upon request.  For a complete list of Local Chapter contacts, visit www.letsmow.com

USLMRA Affiliated Clubs: Our Affiliated Club Program keeps growing.  USLMRA Affiliated Clubs (AC’s) are now being offered across the country as the USLMRA meets the demand for organized and safe lawn mower racing at home tracks, municipal properties and local venues – even your back yard!  AC’s are for folks who want to organize a group of racers to race safely and locally while following USLMRA Build and Tech rules in a flexible manner.

Whereas racing mowers in the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series and Local Chapter system follow USLMRA Build and Tech rules with 100% compliance, an Affiliated Club can have some flexibility in their Build and Tech rules, as long as USLMRA safety mandates are adhered to with 100% compliance.

Affiliated Clubs are designed for groups of racers wishing to race locally on a home track and not travel; race tracks wishing to host sanctioned USLMRA events; venues seeking weekly or monthly races; groups wishing to get into lawn mower racing; and groups wanting insurance coverage.   Have you ever wanted to organize your friends and race, while not becoming a full-scope Local Chapter?  Is there a race track just down the road from your house where you would like to race?  Then organizing an Affiliated Club is the way to MOW!  Interested?  Then contact USLMRA headquarters at letsmow@aol.com.
