What about hydrostats?
« on: June 21, 2006, 10:13:04 am »
Ok, I know that as far as racing goes hydrostat trany's are a no-go.

:?: is:  How stout are they, and would it be a good choice for a light duty pulling garden tractor, or even just a play mower for riding trails though the woods?  :?

Or should they just be used for mowing the yard?

If you don’t do anything to the mower other then take the blades/deck off, it will run just like it did when you were using it to mow the lawn. If you start playing with the motor, (making it rev higher ect..)  You will decrease the mowers useful life span. How much shorter will it be decrease? It depends on how wild you are with it.

If you get into changing the pulley sizes on the hydro, (so I’ve been told, and researched my self) the tranny will not live very long. The fluid in the hydro tranny was only designed to be pumped under so much pressure and speed.

I ran into the same problem as you, I had a mower with a hydro tranny. I ended up buying another mower with a gear box.

CreechFan,

I have a MTD that's like the one you have (probably the same trany).  The engine is off of it right now.  Do you, (or does anyone else) know how strong it would be if I leave the mower stock, and just pull the mowing deck off?

Maybe I can use it for a work tractor around the house.

When you say strong, what exactly do you mean?

My brings 18hp twin runs good, and is strong, the tranny works, I’ve not yet pulled anything with it though because I plan on taking the motor off and putting it on that Craftsman….

I would think if everything remained stock it would last a while with proper maintenance.

If you constantly exceed the mowers stock limits (pulling big loads, improper maintenance ect..) it’s performance will decrease fast and not be as strong.
