Craftsman canadian build
« on: October 14, 2008, 07:15:06 pm »
Hey! so i decided that i should post my pics and slight progess of my 1982 Craftsman LT8.
I am from Oakville Ont, Canada. And im only 17. Now i am building this tractor to the mod specs of soltra. but its mostly gonna be used for ripping around at my cottage! but to the safety specs!!.. Now i will warn everyone that i live in a regular sub-divison and dont have a welder, so there could be a long wait in progress since i have to wait for my next semester manufacturing program to really start the modifying!! :(... but i have so far set up everything to have this tractor up and running.

the tractor as i purchased it for 60$$

After the clean up of rust on the frame and body panels. and a fresh coat of paint.

My little briggs 8 HP

... After the paint i added a new fuel tank and hooked up all the electrical for turn key starting... ( and i know i do need to find and add a kill switch!!).. i also added  new pullies with a 3 on the motor and a 3 on the 700 peerless.

.... But after i got it up and running and zipping around my neighborhood, in only 3rd gear and i went over a fairly good bump and my stock steering rod bumped off. and stupid me driving around with a unreliable steering and no brakes since the stock ones were done. i was turned into a curb at about 20mph and ended up on the hood, kept on the tractor by my steering wheel to the waist. And this really made me realize how stupid this was.... and when everyone on this forum says to make it safe before power, that is the uttermost truth!!! Now i need to wait till manufacturing to fabricate a new front end.

The damage

http://s295.photobucket.com/albums/mm148/elup/?action=view&current=IMG_1418.jpg

.... Also the reason i am not going to run in racing yet or purchase a new front end... is because i really dont have the kinda of money. but if anyone has pictures of how they set up their steering or has the same kind of craftsman please can you post some pics to help!!  8)

and for mods, im planning on: direct steering, make the tractor lower, add a foot throttle, and all the safety it needs.
oh and i might need a new seat cause theres a tiny tear in it :P lol

Unfortunately you can't build a racing lawnmower for free.  Set a budget and spend your money wisely.  It sounds like you learned your lesson.  That is a perfect example of why NOT to use a stock front axle and why you need brakes, and why you don't go "ripping around the cottage."

You need to build a front end and loose those stock steering ends.  Look though the build section and you will find many examples.

And when you get it done, don't go racing through the streets.  YOU WILL GET HURT!

lol... yeah the plan is to build it safe and solid!! and with regards to the budget im trying to be money conscious but i dont want to be using cheap parts!! so if i need to spend the money i will! lol.... and btw if someone has plans or pics on how they setup their steering and front end would be great. cause i plan on making my own.
