16 hp ohv v twin

this is a stock motor and it has set almost five years and i got it out andgot it started but it will only run on choke and i cleaned the carb really good what would make it cut off without the choke being on????

i just did and it is still doing it could it be the fuel pump?

Listen to Squidd, there is a screw at the top of the carburetor that takes a flat screw driver, it is a plug that goes into the idle passage, those carburetors like to corrode in there a bit when they sit around, you have to remove that plug and clean in there, maybe even stick a fine wire in there and blast it with high pressure air, just cleaning the carb out won't do it. Make sure the entire idle curcuit is clear before you put it together, follow it all the way through. If it runs while being choked it sure doesn't need a fuel pump, once the idle passage is clear it should idle fine.
