differences in the 18 hp's

I picked up a 18 hp opposed twin today and the shrouding is off it so i dont know the model. I was wondering if theres and way to tell the difference between the aluminum bore and the cast iron bore 18 hp opposed twins. Im assuming if its a cast iron bore you could see a sleeve if you pulled the head off. Is there and external clues that would give it away?

take the back plate off. you will see the steel liners from there.
the rods will be stamped with 40 (16hp), 42 (18hp), or 46 (20hp)
