reccomended oil for ARC rod.
« on: August 14, 2008, 05:57:34 pm »
I got my ARC rod in the other day ( thanks George) and installed it per the specs. Man these things are nice. Anyhow, the instructions said to use a medium weight oil . I'm guessing that means 10w-30. Is that about right? Just wondering because I have several quarts of Amsoil 0w-40 synthetic. If that's too thin, guess I'll just give the stuff to someone in our club.

well i consider 5-20 a light oil, and 15-40 or 20-50 a heavy oil.  Yes i would say that 10-30 is probably the closest to a medium weight oil, but your 0-40 covers the whole range.  So i dont really know about the amsoil.

Depends on what your bearing clearance is.  I use Mobil 1 15-50 mainly cause that's what my motor builder said to run.

First race use a standard non synthetic 10-30 or sae 30 then after that your amsoil will be fine.

Thanks George. Man, I couldn't believe the precision of the rod. When I got it, I thought that it didn't have a rod cap and was all one piece until I removed the bolts. The seam between the two pieces was invisible. I'll be real interested to see how it performs with the super-thin rings and the new rod.

I love it when things fit that nice.  I was trying to take apart and clean a lathe chuck, and even though I had all the bolts out I couldn't figure out where it was supposed to split.  I thought the seam was hidden somewhere, but it turned out the seam was on the outside diameter, as in the open as possible!  And when I put it back together the only reason I could see the seam was the but of oil that squeezed out.
