you can find horizontal vanguards, probably just as easy as finding a vert.  A lot of commercial mowers run vannys and big ones at that.

All small engines turn clockwise looking at the flywheel, as far as I've ever seen.

It is possible to use a vertical vanguard and flip it on its side, you need the pick up tube and oil pump from a horizontal engine and carb, spacer and bolts from horizontal. Also you will have to fabricate an oil dip stick and plug off the old hole.  As mentioned it would be easier and cheaper to find a horizontal engine, the crankshafts are lighter because they are over an inch shorter and they have bearings on the pto side as well.

I have a cousin that runs a vanny on his cub. By far the most bang for the buck when it comes to making hp. His engine is a 18hp bottom end with a 23hp top end. 2-1 intake with a custom cnc adapter to run a kohler 1.0 carb. MWSC flywheel, precision cam, arc rods and flattops. Vm07's on the rear and will pull a 25 tooth gear at 1100lbs without a problem. It even gave some 50.5 cube nqs tractors a major workout at a pull this summer. He is on gas they were on alky.

vanguards are actually up to a 37 horse in a gas twin now i believe.

EDIT just checked the website and they show up to a 35 in a gas twin, but i am pretty sure Bad Boy mowers are coming out with a 37 horse vanny.

there bigger one is diesel, but last time i checked briggs wish list, it only had 35 hp. didnt think much of it because hp and cid is too big for any race classes.

You guys are right, i was wrong.  I just could have swore i saw a mower marked 37 horse with a vanny in it.  The 35 is still a monster though.
