What engine to start with for a 30hp+ single?
« on: August 13, 2008, 09:54:39 am »
Hey guys, I need to make 30+hp with a single. The only rules are a single cylinder, no transimssions or radiator.. any recomendations on what to start with? I really want something different than the all billet $5000 briggs so, any idea is appreciated.  thanks.

From a single cylinder, I would love to see that on a dyno I have run many singles on a dyno and they ain't pumping out what ya think they are........ A twin sure nuff. A mountain machine built to the hilt gx-390 yea and will use that 5000 plus a bit.

First off thanks for the replies. As for the application it will be used for a outlaw type kart. I will be turning engine horizontally..mostly because i can find the used verticle shaft engines about 100x easier than the horizontal. I will do most of the machine and assembly work myself. It just seems to me that you mower guys are making great hp and  with not spending big money. I was really thinking of using a 500ish cc briggs..is there a big displacement tec engine that will go 6500+?   again, thanks a lot!

Read the original post again dude...........AND I QUOTE(Hey guys, I need to make 30+hp with a single. The only rules are a single cylinder) END QUOTE.... he plainly states that the only rules are single cylinder. NOW if what Randy was referring to was a twin, then what good is that when his rules require a single.....

and billet stroker cranks, which we do not have for the bigger mower motors. If we had the right parts so it would stay together sure it is possible, I have gotten 24 from a 12 hp but it did not stay together.

How big of a single cylinder do you want to go with, and I want to make sure I understand that you want a horizontal shaft engine. What price range? (under $5K)

no, no..i want a verticle shaft engine. I will just mount it horizontally  ...it will work alright, i've done it before years ago. I would run a modded Tec star but, wanted to build something out of the ordinary ..and this should do it!  We need to be competetive against the 2 strokers (comers and sudams)there making around 30-40hp with no torque so, with slightly less hp and good tq i think we can do it!  As far as displacement.. would love something big with a good rpm (6500+). The cheaper the better, i dont mind blowing up once in a while as long as it's a badass!

Well then start with a 31 OHV and call mike at Precision cams and trust me with his cam and the right head work it will run em down and pass em. They have gobs of torque. A gentleman in the Carolina's has been doing this awhile already. His biggest problem is putting the power to the ground. I love those type of problems. Oh and he is only using a 28 ohv and turning it on around 7000
And yes its turned horizontal with no oiling issue's
