16hp single cyl smoking like crazy!
« on: July 31, 2008, 01:01:30 pm »
I just picked this 16hp b&s single cyl engine up and it SMOKES real bad! Even worse at idle speeds. Runs Great! Just puts out a smoke screen. It is an overhead valve engine. Seems to smoke alot out of the crankcase breather tube too. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advanced!

Sounds like the rings are shot. Time for a rebuild!

It more than likely has a blown head gasket. Single cyl. OHV Briggs are famous for that. There aint no head bolts between the combustion chamber and the pushrod gallery. When they blow out there  the compression from the cylinder blows right into the crankcase. Make sure you check the head with a straight edge before you install a new head gasket.

1 step at a time. pull the head, inspect the gasket, and while you're there look in the cylinder and see if you can see anything obvious.

Like these guys said, It'll be a blown head gasket. Most likely right in the valley. But be careful, I had an AVS engine, bought it in same condition, new head gasket and it wasn't an hour later the AVS flew apart.

Thanks guys for all of the help! I replaced the head gasket and the valve seal and poof, no more smoke! Runs great. Cylinder looked great, so I didn't even bother with the rings.
