GUYS I SAW A COUPLE OF RACERS ATTEND OUR TRACK WITH THEIR ENTIRE FAN REMOVED... THEY HAD INSTALLED A SMALL 12V FAN FROM LIKE A SMALL CAR OR SOMETHING ON TOP OF THE ENGINE COVER.. THEIR INSTALLATION LOOKED REAL NEAT.. NOT SURE OF THEIR RULES BUT THEY WERENT ALLOWED TO RACE WITH US B/C OF OTHER MODIFICATIONS..

That works, and allows the shroud to be closer when horizontal=less width=less to cut off output shaft and fit under stock hood. Look for lower amp h.duty, h.o.(6-7") fans, and small(light) moto 12v batt is all u need.Add a 2pole quick disconnect and custom jumper cables to recharge if running multiple classes and short on time between races. As far as fan is concerned, no fan is as good as it gets when reclaiming lost hp, just make sure the cooling system u run will last duration of longest race u run ( some h.o. electric fans will kill a small battery quick) smaller the battery-less weight, match the parts as needed.Don't cut on till u need it; up to running temp - hmm.. then u might be able to run a lighter battery.

??? will the horsepower released from removing the fan gonna be enough to compensate for the extra weight of the battery and electric fan???

I can't imagine how removing a few plastic teeth is going to make that much difference. If we're talking about the drag and wind resistance, then I'd imagine that putting an automotive fan on top of the engine would essentially cause the same thing- more resistance. The best thing you can do is get an aluminum flywheel, which weighs about 50% less than a cast iron wheel. Now that's some serious weight reduction and less weight for the piston to grunt through.

Trust me I know what your saying!!!! But if I were you I would look for cheap HP somewhere else and start saving for the wheel! It will be worth the wait.

I wish everyone would get theis idea in their head you don't have to have the high dollar starter with the billet wheel. I personally am using a stock oem 12hp starter (plastic starter gear) on my lil truck (sportsman) mower. I do have to back the motor up to the compression stroke but it starts it just fine.

I'm possibly getting my old billet wheel re-machined. But if that doesn't work, I'm getting an ARC wheel. The plastic gears for the Briggs starters are $4 at TSC. So I picked up a few. Heck- I even have a few Briggs starters. Either way, aluminum is the way to go. You get so much extra pickup and response. Plus, if worse comes down to worse, you can resell it for close to what you paid.

nor 66 just trying to get as much as possible out of basicly stock engine.Yes i will have arc flywheel next year if i stick with briggs power plant!!! here my thoughts next year going with cam too, they say you have to remove compression release when you mod the cam! ok when i got this motor(31 ohv) they said wouldnt start because of bad starter.so I but a brand new long hd briggs starter on it.it still wouldnt start every time it came up on compression would stop!! after I found out they had a compression release I took it apair sure anought spring was gone on the release leaver.so I am wandering if I couldnt start it before how am I going to start it with a cam with no compression release on it and a light flywheel! just wandering. also on are flat head build we went with expensice starter because didnt like the thought of stalling on track and lifting hood and rolling motor back to restart.
