Single OHV or Twin Flat Head? I'm split?
« on: June 23, 2008, 03:12:53 pm »
I am building a racer and would like some input on which motor to run.  I have been searching through archives and it seems the OHV is capable of more once modified?  Rules for the class allow OHV singles or Flathead twins, my main focus is on the chassis right now so the motor will be run stock (or close to it) but I need to pick a motor to run.  I have the option of running a 16hp OHV or a 18hp flathead twin.  Which will be better to run in stock form? I'm suuming the twin since it is rated at 18hp?   Thanks for the help.

thanks for the link/input.  Most of the racing up here is short track I believe.  The OHV motor might be the way to go, only have to buy half the parts!  I will definitely invest in the valvetrain upgrades if I do.

You can make some serious HP with the Twins. Its mainly driver choice. I run the twin but mine is special mod. 46777. The big one plus full pressure lube.

The OHV's are all over the CP class.

If it were me.......................OHV single.

It's a Hard choice but I would go with the single OHV for the simple reason of all the performance stuff out there for them.

Ec has roller rockers
Precision cams
ARC rods
AVS pistons
ECT.....

Your original question was,  which is better stock.
I have been running a 16 twin, haven't had any of the OHV's on our short track that had anything for me.
But I haven't run against a "built" OHV,  and they tell me parts for them are high.

So if your going to stay with stock motor, I'd say the twin.
If your planning on mods later, which sounds like you are, prolly OHV is best.

However, you can modify an opposed twin with stock parts.....

The twin is better on short tracks actually. There isnt a whole lot out yet. But stock they come with tons of torque, they dont like alot of rpm's though and there are cams and upgrades out there for the twin.
wide open into the corner, pray to god i make it out
