10 hp Briggs
« on: June 21, 2008, 03:17:22 pm »
Okay,
Got a 10 Briggs working on and I put the motor together about a week ago went to fire it and it didnt fire. I made sure the carb was getting gas and it was. Checked the fire and had fire. Flywheel key was NOT sheared. Checked the head gaset and soon as I pulled the head off the gasket kinda cut itself into layers almost. I am assuming the problem was a blown head gasket? Also had a little bit of oil leaking. Should I hone the engine and give it some new rings? And how much should I hone it? Enough to get rid of the ridge?

Thanks,

Did the motor have compression? And if your going to hone motor i would probably recomend puting in a new set of rings, as for honing the motor i would only do it enough to get a nice cross hatch in the bore. Are you sure the plug is firing under compression?

Yeah checked compression and come to think about it.....!!! I never could get a readin out of the compression tester I was using..... I used the round type you screw into the plug hole....

Yeah and it was firing on the compression stroke...
