turn down flywheel
« on: June 18, 2008, 09:40:24 pm »
I need to know how to properly turn down a flywheel for a 28cid. I would like a VERY detailed description on how to and also pics. I talked to a machine shop and the guy wants to know what exactly he needs to do to it. And don't worry, I'm not going take a grinder and do it myself. This machinist has 60 years of experience on his hands.

Not A good idea! They are unsafe at anything above governed rpm. These things are cast and cutting them down might bring imperfections to light alot sooner. This is not a safe thing to do, and I will not help you on how, but if you do, you need to come up with a scatter shield.

I would just look into buying an ARC wheel safer and most likely cheaper in the long run. Plus you don't have a possible grenade spinning at over 5000RPM. Just my .02

Agree....Lightend stock flywheels should be illegal in my opinion. There will be many opinions on this...but when you are sitting in the pits and the guy next to you is reving his engine---You really don'y know if his wheel is lightend or not. I have seen the after effect of when one of these types flywheels explode...it's no pretty.

Either leave flywheels stock or go aftermarket.

I am going with a ARC flywheel for the arma legal mower but I will be racing with an outlaw group that does not allow aluminum flywheels. I will be running a scatter shield 1/4" steel. I am all for safety, that's why I turned to you guys for the help. Guys, here me out. I take this sport serious. I am not trying to go cheap and save money. I am simply trying to gain and advantage and do better in a race while complying to the rules of the track. I am hustling hard to get the money to build a good chasi and put ARC rod and piston and flywheel on the sportsman.   Thanks for your concern for my safety! That's what makes this sport so good, people really do care for one another's safety and well being!

They may change thier rules.  I'm with Tom, lightned flywheels should be illegal.  I don't want to see anyone get hurt.

Run a stock on or run an ARC wheel.

I was at an event when one exploded. Ended the drivers career, fortunately they saved his leg. Fortunately no one else was hurt. DO NOT DO IT regardless.

Has anyone been at a race where a stock wheel exploded? I damaged my old billet aluminum wheel and might have to race with a plain stock wheel until I either get the old one repaired or get an ARC wheel ordered. It makes me a tad nervous. That said, all the guys in our group have stock wheels and none have blown so far. Then again none of us have modified the engines very heavily.Doesn't prove anything, but I'm wondering how frequent this is.

I strongly suggest a billet flywheel. They're expensive, but I'd rather not have a piece of cast iron spinning right next to my you-know-whats.

The only wheels i have seen explode were wheels that had been altered. As for hurting it to remove magnets and epoxy it really depends on how you do so. You nick it in any wat that is a sress riser and a break looking to happen.

You said they don't allow aluminum....
What about billet steel?
Your machinist buddy should be able to do one for you.
