Help me understand
« on: May 08, 2008, 08:02:07 pm »
I know how a flat head works, I just don't understand how a OHV works. Can someone please explain to me just what goes on inside one of these?

sometimes it don't     thats when you load up and go home and tear the engine down and see how many $$$$ you broke.  :bash:               Its like a valve in block except the valves are moved into the head and connected to the cam shaft with push rods and rocker arms where in a flat head the valves are opened directly by the lifter. The result of moving the valves into the head are bigger ports, better FLOW, and more power.
Sometimes imagination can be even more powerful than knowledge !

ohv's are just like car engines from the 60's to the late 90's. the cam pushes on the tappets, the tappets push on the pushrods, the pushrods cause the rockers to rock, as they rock it causes the valves to open. don't be fooled cams do not open and close valves. cams open valves and springs close the valves.
valve in block engines are simpler but inefficient, the ohv engines takes out 180 degrees of bend in the airflow, causing better efficiency and more power.

same as a flat head ford V-8  and  and engines of today  only difference is push rods. And valves in the head instead of in the block.

Where the push rod is in the picture, is where the valve stem would pass through and below the push rod side of the rocker arm is where the valve would seat.
