Jackshaft Pictures.....
« on: April 25, 2008, 12:43:06 pm »
After a lot of reading and searching I am going to build 1 of my mowers with a jackshaft.  Now comes the fun part, building or finding a good jackshaft, finding a good location and getting it mounted.

Anyone that is running a jackshaft on their mowers please post pics of your setup.  I would like to see how you are doing this so I get it right the first time...  ALSO, where does one get a good setup jackshaft??

I guess this could go in the Driveline forum too

Thanks for the move...  I could not delete the post and move it......

As for pics, there HAS to be more then just ONE picture on this forum, but I can not find them.  I am looking to see what the Murry jackshaft looks like installed...  What shaft to use with it and how it mounts up...
Here is the one from Georges post....

Where would you buy one like this?

I don't have any pics, but on an older racer I built I built a jackshaft using just pillow block bearings.
You can get them at most machine shops and the best part is you can adjust your shaft.
All you need is a piece of shaft the size you want to use.  2 pillow block bearings and 2 pulleys.  Make mounts for the bearings below the frame and above it.  The farther apart the more stable it will be.

Hope this helps

Hey,

On my IMOW I used a jackshaft utilizing a Murray deck spindle housing from a old cutting deck. I was going to cut the hub out of front rim that has an ID of 1 3/8”, pick up some go cart wheel bearings and pop those in there and there’s your jack shaft. But I had the deck spindle laying around so I figured I use it. I can get pics tonight. John

Check out a couple of the pictures in my build, i used a couple of bearing blocks and attatched to the cross member. Then i machined up a shaft to fit.You coukld just use stock bar and buy pulleys and bearings to match.I just modify what i can get my hands on for free! 8)

That piece came from Steve Bertrand. Give him a call, he could set you up with one.

practical jackshaft; 1 muuray deck spindle part#55962, 1 5/8 dia 3/16 keyway shaft cut to desired length, 2 5/8 shaft locks, steel or aluminum plate. search online for acme mowersports in texas. They have a how to section for jackshafts,(and other assemblies) and also sell all components neede to build one. I beleive you can get the murray spindle there for about 25 bucks + shipping.

Here Is a pic, not a very  good one though.
I made it from a Murray deck spindle, shaft & pulleys.
The pulley end and blade adapter end of the shaft are the same. Put a deck pulley on each end of the shaft and measure the length between grooves, On mine was around 6", so I moved transaxle up in chassis same distance. line up lower pulley with motor pulley and you should line up pretty good with transaxle. Free, easy jack shaft.
