Vanguard 14hp exhuast
« on: April 22, 2008, 03:05:15 pm »
On my 14hp twin, the exhuast ports don't have any threads. when I use exhuast flanges, do I need the gaskets that were originally there?

I like to use gaskets.
I have done so much, with so little, for so long, that I can now do anything, with nothing, all the time!

Gaskets are fine when they work.... Had fors 289 couldn' keep header gaskets on it used red atv never had another leak...Used it on all our race car header installs.

So would this work for head gaskets on a B&S?

As long as you dont warp the heck out of it. After done welding, run a flat file across it until you get it smoothed back out.
When bolting it on, you dont need a cheater bar, just get them a little past snug.

I know a guy who uses a caulking gun and clear silicon on his street stock exhaust. "I gotta take the dang things off after every race, this stuff cleans up easier and I can get 6 tubes for one little squeeze tube of RTV!"

I think I'll stick with the RTV.

sorry....
You can weld dto those, but I'd suggest you get some light wweight tubing the right size and practice first. Those are thin and not easy to weld to if you haven't had experiance at it. Also, mock up your exhaust while they are bolted to the motor and tack them in place, then pull off motor and wweld them up. If you dont get them straight you'll have problems getting exhaust to seal.
