Electric Big Wheel Trike...Impulsive weekend project
« on: March 31, 2008, 11:01:48 pm »

All From spare lawn mower parts.
It originally was suppose to be for my 4 year old son, but it's too fast.
The thing must go at least 15mph!
But before you all say "OMG the motor is'nt meant for that it's gonna over heat !!!111" I know, dont worry the battery starts to dump in just a couple minuets anyways, motor hardly has a chance to get hot. I'm so impressed with it's performance I'm gonna pick up an automotive starter and modify it for cooling (holes in front and back of can with fan on end of armature pulling air over it and heat sinks on case) and I plan to replace the battery with a deep cycle of some kind, this one on there now is only 140 CCA. And my plans also include a battery mount and electric motor braking.

Parts List:
Lawn mower Starter motor (from scrap 14hp briggs)
Lawn mower Battery
Lawn mower solenoid
Lawn mower axle/diff/sproket
Some angle iron, micro switch and of course an Old Bike.

Hey jeffescortlx,

You might try one of the gel cells that they use for electric scooters.  The one on my wife's scooter lasts for 10-15 miles.

yep, I'm gonna be looking into all my options, any thing that can handle drain & charge, with out costing a ton. I'm sure a Optima would work good, but I dont want to spend too much. I'd like to see 1/2 hour run time, or maybe a couple miles.

Yes I have, and I allready have a small 2 stroke set aside for a project.
But I want to keep this electric, only because it's quite.
