« on: March 31, 2008, 05:46:35 pm »
What mods can I do to my stock cam the make it lighter? Could I take it to a shop and get them to drill 4 big holes in it ? Or would I be beter off just buying a new cam from Don? What does his cams cost any way?

Well the best thing to do is call Don and tell him what you want. Then you send him your core and he does the work to it and sends it back ;). I forget what he charges for this but I know it is more cost effective that the others and you get the same thing... Also he now has 3 cam grinders so turn around time is much shorter...

Call him on his cell 701-400-4084

I have used a Hole saw and drill press.
I also use my lathe to turn down the width of the gear on the right side to lighten it.
Depends what tools you have and what you can afford.
Easy to scribe and figure out.
If I remember right from the V of the tooth in .700 and 1.100 between holes.
That is GH's 2003 USLMRA Championship motor.
Hope that helps.

I have a good friend who works in a machine shop. He has done a tone of stuff for me for free and he said if I tell him what to do, he will do it for me. Oh and Don, what size holes are those in that cam?

Well here is the deal.
Noticeable?? Yes if you start to lighten EVERYTHING!!!!
Much like NASCAR when they go over everything then the gains are noticed.
Lighten the cam and flywheel and crank and pulleys and axle and rims and tires YES!!! Then you will notice.
350 trany with 3rd and reverse in is slow and sluggish. Remove 3rd and reverse and YOU CAN feel difference.
Now in a motor with some mods???? Maybe not so much.
I mean some notice and some don't. If you are doing it all I would spend the time. If you are doing most then I would do it.
Heck I do it just cause it looks cool!!!!
Hope that helps
Don
One Mower thing about this post and picture of the inside of one of my motors.
#1 Notice the rod??? NOT billet. Cast aluminum is fast then Billet. Problem is the big 1.5 journal cranks are NO longer availible. But they are out there.
#2 Light weight cam....................cool
Remember IF I show motor parts it is from stuff from the past and not the present. Stuff I do today is Top Secret. We can chat about it but I won't post pictures until it is time......................
This picture is of 4 differnt motors in my bac1k yard years ago.
Guess which one is GH's Championship motor?????

I don't want any of your secrets (yet) Don   I plan on putting together a test motor myself for low cost. I just want to see if I can build a motor for cheap and take it to the July 4th race in my town and smoke this old man who thinks he is hot stuff when it comes to a mower. If I don't screw up the motor I will take some mower money and make a very good motor.

By the way Don, I got the motor 101 DVD saturday. It's good stuff, THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT!!!!!!!!

Thanks Man!!!
IF I would not have tried my hand at motors I would not know what I do today. Dang Lucky using Hot Rod motor info on Mower stuff.
Go for it. I mean do your own. This makes it your own too. Like Tim the Tool Man Taylor use to say. If you don't work on it or do it yourself it Ain't really yours!!!
You don't have to buy anyone's stuff if you have the know how and time. Basics baby basic Hot Rodding in your mower!!!
Let me know how it turns out!!
