28 flathead rings
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:35:58 pm »
I am getting ready to order new rings for my 28 flathead. I saw that ther are 2 different types of rings. What kind do I need Chrome or Cont.  The chrome rings cost $ 29.64 and the Cont. cost $ 20.53 . I was just wondering what the difference is and what kind I need.   Thanks

yhou sure about the .010 because Briggs only makes stuff in standard or .020 anymore. Been doing that for several years now.

Depends on the condition of your cylinder, get someone to check & see if it's ok standard. If not get it bored.

Make sure that the piston itself wasn't changed from one year to another. Many newer Briggs engines use a Japanese made piston that uses totally different rings while many of the older engines use the chrome sets. Check your year dates just to make sure. I made the mistake of ordering the cheaper set only to find out mine required the older set due to the engine being made prior to 2001.

OK... Understand I run a much tighter ring gap than most. Where stock rings start you out with app. .012 ring gap I use .020 rings and cut to fit a closer tolerance.

This is from another thread, but applies to the ring question..

If I read this right you are saying, if the standard bore has wore slightly  oversize , so that "new" standard rings start out at .012 or more, then you use .020 over rings with the standard piston in the slightly oversize bore ....and just file the ring ends to create a smaller gap... .003 to .005...?

Is that correct..?
