Kholer cammand 14hp
« on: December 07, 2007, 12:00:16 am »
I am rebuilding my kholer cammand 14hp ohv and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to take the the balance counter wieght out of the engine or would this be detremental to the performance of the engine?

i have the same engine as you, and i have heard for a Briggs or Tecumseh it makes them shake really bad at a higher rpm. You might want to replace the intake push rod with an exhaust push rod, because the intake push rod is made of a lighter weight metal (aluminum, i think) and it can bend over a stock rpm. The exhaust and intake push rods are the same, other than the metals.

If it were me i would keep that counter weight in for a safety purposes. Hey Gary, i have yet to see an aluminum push rods in a kohler.

That would be a bad thing if you didn't have the crankshaft rebalanced.

thats just what I've heard from a fellow racer. It makes sense to me because if something were to break on a stock mower and the engine were to rev up really high, that would bend in stead of blowing the engine.

yeah i notice when i went back out to the garage that the countershaft runs the oil pump. so i cant really take it out, also i noticed that the pushrods were steel in my engine. I ended up having my cam reground by percisoion cams, i got stronger valve springs and retainers, roller rockers, a billet rod and flywheel, and a new piston. I think that sums up what i did i hope it will be a mean engine!!!!
thank you for all the help though

It's  398cc  displacement (3.43 bore & 2.64). They use stock chevy smblk lifters (.842/.843 diameter??). A few older part stores use the same part#'s for both (stock ones anyway). These are great( much cheaper subs )
and will do fine up to 55-5800rpm w/ minimal wear, 6-9000 continuous - we've had to redesign the valve train, starting to have good longterm results w/ minimal wear.

Oh yeah, leave in the balance shaft unless you redesign the oiling system and correct stationary imbalance on the crank.

The reason I asked about the lifters is this:
I'm well aware that hydraulic Kohlers use chevy/olds lifters. Solids can be put in, no problem. Those chevy lifters weigh over twice as much as a briggs style lifter. Not a good place for heavy parts. So, now we need excessive spring pressure. Valve gear wont last and cams wear out quick.
I'd like to try a some schubeck lifters, but they don't come cheap and they are not exactly shipping out parts right now.
Just my 2 cents on the valvetrain of an otherwise incredible engine.

Where did you get the flywheel?  My buddy josh havlik runs a 15 hp kolher command that runs really good but he's still running the stock 21lb flywheel

Aluminum flywheel will have to be a oneoff item ( custom ). There are some light solids, but yes...pricey.

Been using their products for years, very limited parts that will crossover to a one cyl..
No solids or flywheel for single(ohv). But I believe it's being looked into!!!
