Newbie to Mower Racing - Advice on build
« Reply #15 on: April 15, 2006, 11:04:03 am »
I've hit a wall with my build.  What to do next.  I would like to lower the frame down and have a Peerless 600 on my mower.  I understand how to lower it with the use of a jackshaft.  I was wondering about routing the belt around the shifter and then where to relocate the battery...I do have a few ideas but thought that I'd ask if anyone has any experience doing it with this transaxle.  I do have a foote chain drive with the stock rearaxle that would mount right up to this mower, but it would shorten my wheelbase if I mounted it in the stock location.  I would like this thing to handle alot better.  Like I had said at the beginning of this subject, we really don't have many rules, it's just for fun....but it is fun to win!

Tory, thanks for the #, I'll check into that bearing.  The neighborhood NAPA wanted $10 for a similar bearing....I figure'd I could find them cheaper than that if I kept looking.

I have considered building a custom front axle beam from parts and iron that we have lying around.  I used to have a go-kart in my younger years and remember how they worked.  Consider doing my own spindles as well.

Anyone have suggestions of what to use for my driveline....Peerless 600 or Foote chain drive(believed to be a 2010) with stock rear axle.  I do believe that I have a Peerless 700, but I'm pretty sure that it has something broken inside.  I would consider taking it apart and fixing it, but that would cost extra money.

If youre going to fab youre own axle, maybe consider a 5/8 spindle rather than 3/4. Easeir to find good bearings for, even at a napa. Also I believe the bearings there offering you are probably prime-line and the deere ones you will be hapier with. TB

I had considered going to a 5/8" spindle, just for the reason you mentioned about bearing prices.

Any comments about my driveline dilemma?

My personal opinion the 700 series tranny is what I would go with!!! But thats what I use so I am a bit biased on them!!!!

Guess I should have done my research before I opened my mouth on the other trans I've got....it's a Peerless, I got that right...but it's a 350 series.   How would it stack up against the others that I've got?

Well if it's got something "broke inside" like you said in your other post ...not too good...

However you did mention a Peerless 600 series (transaxel) a number of the parts should be interchangeable between the two if you going for trans and live axel set up...

Either of those (when working) 600 or 350..would be better than the Foote

Thanks for the advice on the trans, I may have to break that 350 open sometime and check out what's wrong with it.  I believe I have a gear with a broken tooth.  It would pop, under a load, what seemed like once every rotation of the gear...I had thought it was a broken tooth on a sprocket at first but that wasn't it.

Anyways, I think I may just jackshaft the 600, if I can find some cheap or free parts to do the job.  If not, I may have to consider an alternative.  It makes it a real challenge to do this build for less than $100.  Items that have been purchased prior, that you have lying around, don't count towards the total.  As well as donations wouldn't count either, those are "free" items.

So...If someone was to "donate" a part ...like a trans gear from your local lawnmower shop...in appreciation for say a cash donation to his favorite "charity" (the cash register)...

Would that count..??

I don't know if that one would work!?!

Now, if you have a friend who goes and buys the part and then gives it to you, that would work....you didn't spend any money!

The $100 limit is kind of on an honor system, not saying they won't ask for receipts to prove that it's under....but right now they don't.

Seems you guys could have a "claimer rule" where any racer could buy another for $100 right there and now.

That's just too funny!

I guess you could have your first Roger Penske of mower racing too.  Guy comes up and says, "I'll buy every racer here for a $100/ea, but you can still drive them, it's just now I own them and as an owner I win every race!"

On a side note, I was checking into some pulleys.  I had looked at McMaster and Phoenix.  Is it just me or did I look at the wrong item, but McMaster is a lot cheaper on their pulleys.  Maybe I was looking in the wrong area.
