1"vs 3/4"or Tube
« on: November 07, 2007, 02:59:03 pm »
I did search first and read
I am building an ARMA S/S and was wondering about weight of 1" tube conpaired to 3/4" or even 1/2". Any body ever weigh the two to see how much difference? and also too much or not enough flex? I have 1" FREE :woo: and hoping not to buy 3/4", but concerned because of governed stock 12hp wanting to keep the mowchine lite  I did read some about someone using 1/2" and some using 1" than moving down to 3/4". Oh and its an MTD frame, 12hp Briggs, jack shaft and transaxle setup and I weigh about 155 lbs.

Weight of the tubing will depend on the wall thickness of the tubing used.

Weight of steel plate per sq ft is as follows

1" thick = 40 lbs per sq ft
1/2" thick = 20 lbs per sq ft
3/4" thick = 15 lbs per sq ft
1/4" thick = 10 lbs per sq ft
3/16" thick = 12.5 lbs per sq ft
1/8" thick = 5 lbs per sq ft
1/16" thick = 2.5 lbs per sq ft

Knowing this we can figure the approximate weight of the tubing......

A 20' length of 1" square 1/8" wall tubing will weigh 33.3 lbs
A 20' length of 3/4" square 1/8" wall tubing will weigh 25 lbs
A 20' length of 1" square 1/16" wall tubing will weigh 16.65 lbs
A 20' length of 3/4" square 1/16" wall tubing will weigh 12.5 lbs
A 20' length of 1/2" square 1/8" wall tubing will weigh 16.65 lbs
A 20' length of 1/2" square 1/16" wall tubing will weigh 8.325 lbs

Pick yer poison.... You'll need about 25' - 30' of tubing following Georges 2007 build.

If you can get 1'' for free, i would go for the 1''.  Thats saved money that use can use elsewhere to make up for weight.

:omg: Thanks for all of that info will help alot, so I'm looking at maybe 6 lbs difference if I use 30'. What I have is 1x1x1/16 with some 1/8 screw hole here and there, best thing it's free, except maybe the hour labor to get it stripped out, but it's clean no rust few spot welds. Looking forward to this build for the 2008 racin :D .  ACLMRA-FloridaARMA-LC. May get to see some racin on the 17 as long as track is dry  THANKS AGAIN TO ALL ON THIS FOURM.
