I did a weld just the other day that looks like that...and i just started welding! BTW, would 7010-G 3/16" be a good rod to use on a mower??
All it takes is practice.
Don't use that rod. The 7010 would be fine but the 3/16" size is waaaaaay too big. Need too much amperage to weld effectivly with it and would blow through the sheetmetal on the frame and thin wall tube.
7010 is a deep penetrating rod for DC+ welding and is good for welding dirty, rusty and painted steel.
3/16" needs 140 - 305 amps and is for welding over 3/8" thick steel plate
For a beginner I'd recommend 1/16" rod on a mower. It's good for up to 3/16" steel it only needs 20 - 40 amps so it lessens the risk of blowing holes in these sheetmetal frames.
The 3/32nd rod I'm using is almost too big for this thin stuff so I'm welding a little hot and fast which I don't recommend without practice on scrap.
Try some 7018 1/16", you'll like it. It's known as a drag rod. You can weld all positions with it on AC, DC+ or DC-. It's a medium penetrating rod and easy to get Xray quality out of it. Just keep it dry, if the flux gets damp dry it in a rod oven.
