If it ain't fun, it ain't worth doing. I always thought the saying was if more was better than too much is just right

Nor, did ya win the feature in Wilksboro and didn't even show us a pic with the checkered.  :noplease:

I did a weld just the other day that looks like that...and i just started welding!   BTW, would 7010-G 3/16" be a good rod to use on a mower??
Gotta love a good 'ol Briggs Flathead!

All it takes is practice.

Don't use that rod. The 7010 would be fine but the 3/16" size is waaaaaay too big. Need too much amperage to weld effectivly with it and would blow through the sheetmetal on the frame and thin wall tube.

7010 is a deep penetrating rod for DC+ welding and is good for welding dirty, rusty and painted steel.
3/16" needs 140 - 305 amps and is for welding over 3/8" thick steel plate

For a beginner I'd recommend 1/16" rod on a mower. It's good for up to 3/16" steel it only needs 20 - 40 amps so it lessens the risk of blowing holes in these sheetmetal frames.

The 3/32nd rod I'm using is almost too big for this thin stuff so I'm welding a little hot and fast which I don't recommend without practice on scrap.

Try some 7018 1/16", you'll like it. It's known as a drag rod. You can weld all positions with it on AC, DC+ or DC-. It's a medium penetrating rod and easy to get Xray quality out of it. Just keep it dry, if the flux gets damp dry it in a rod oven.

We'll settle for a pic of the mowchine with the trophy.

I was looking at the points on the AMRA site earlier today, That's how I figured it out. It's showing you second in points for the season.

Congrats, way to mow...... Mabey George will let you borrow his Superman decal at the race in TN

I was looking through the Wilksboro race pics and found a few good shots of you racing but didn't see one with the checkered.

Yea they don't seem to take any pics of the main events, I don't know why. I will try to get some pics up if I can get my pic taker working.

Well my ancient @$$ got a little done today.

Welded up the dash support, fits like a glove. Narrowed the E.C. front axle 1", my rookie mistake not taking into account the extra width of the MCP front brake hubs when I ordered it and now I need to get a 3/8" UNF tap to narrow the tie rod an inch. Had the opportunity to do some destructive metal testing trying to cut George's welds and can vouch that they are good welds with good penetration. Got the front axle mounted and installed the spindles and wheels to drool.... er check measurements. ;)

Was going to weld on the bearing holders for the steering column until I ran out of both flux core wire and 7018 rod  Should have checked my welding supplies BEFORE Sunday

One slight problem.  They won't let us run Aluminumn wheels in modified flathead here.  Wish they would, but they haven't yet except in the open class.

Yep. I know about the aluminum wheels and hope it will change for 2008. Rumor has it they may change and I was talking with the staff about it. No hard decision on it yet.

If the AMRA rule doesn't change I'll be on a lathe making identical 6" x 7.25" steel wheels for the front that will fit my brake hubs and use the aluminum for ARMA and show.

Got some rod, wire and a 3/8" UNF right hand thread tap today so forging ahead I welded in the spherical bearings for the steering column and shortened the tie rod to match the narrowed front axle.

Starting to look like something now vs the "chunk of metal" that my wife called it the other day.  :noplease:
