10 HP briggs will not start
« on: August 02, 2007, 10:50:28 pm »
This is for my racing mower i just got done replacing the crank in my 10HP engine it was striped out i had one from a 11HP i put it in and i cleaned the piston and valves, Well anyway before it had 45 pounds of compression after i got done and tryed to start it well it would not fire and i checked compression then and it was only 30 pounds, Now i have not went to school for small engine repair YET but this was something i was doing to learn to build a good racing mower engine the engine was give to me so i thought i would learn to work of them a little more while i fixed this one, so what do you guys think i have done??

P.S. i lined up the timing marks and it gets fire

Well i don't have a leakdown tester right now but i m going to make one what do you think happend it ran before i thought it would run better and maybe even have more compression because the crank. Now this is what i kinda think it might be i have changed the crank and i know it has a litlle more lift then before and i think because that it DID have more compression and when i tryed to start it the already weak rings just blew on out does anyone think this could have happend???

I found out what it was i got out there today and took off the oil pan and i was looking around and there next to the cam was one of those things that open the valves ( i can't think of what there called ) but it was gone and the intake valve would not open so thats why it would not start i guess what happend was i must have knocked it out when i put the cam in???

After i put it back together again i try the compression and it was 64 pounds and i put some gas in it and it fired and sounds GREAT it sounds better then my 14HP vanguard i got and all i done was take a 10HP and 11HP and built a engine out of them parts and done some polishing also.

Thank you for telling the world what you did find wrong! All to often we go through threads of this nature, inviting conjecture and speculation, and have literally pages of suggestions of what to look for at times, and seldom do we ever see what was wrong in the end, so no one learns anything from it. It is so nice to see some closure to things of this nature!!

Good job on the build! Now bolt it on and go racin dude!!
