I would think that if two of the top running guys in the Nation quite running the kohlers and went to hondas I would have to chosse something else than the kohler. The Briggs has more readily availble parts and is easier to build. The two most common engines on the the circut right now are the gx-390 honda and the briggs OHV's. Don't know of any real competetive kohlers left out there. least wise not on a national circut.

George you gotta get out here and watch some of these Kohlers run.  Onans are popular and seem to be very fast too.  I think engine choice is about like anything else.....just opinions.  I'm a briggs man myself, but they are guys out here that swear by their Kohlers and back it up on the track.

I can't compare "built" engines, but I can compare "worked over" stockers.
Mine is a CV15. 426cc/26CID. Heres what I did:
I took about .035 off the block to bring it to zero deck. These engines have a nice bathtub chamber which should really benefit from this.
I took another .025 off the head for good measure. I don't have a beurette(sp) but it's right between 9.5 and 10:1.
I gave it a 18 horse (CV493) cam and springs. Same lift, more exhaust duration. Still hydraulic. Didn't degree it, so I'm just going from eyeball.
I shimmed the rockers for about .030 preload.
Very mild port blend. Very mild.
Blended the LMK carb before the throttle valve. Stock jetting.
Timing is static at 23 degrees.
Pipe is 1" for 6" then 1 1/8" for another 6". Thats it. Kinda loud with deceleration backfires and a raspy sound. I know it will have more torque with a better pipe, but I haven't got around to it.
Long story short is: first off this thing is nearly indestructible.
Never had a tach on it so I could only guess how high it spins, but I SPIN it. Although the best power is in the mid range.
If I actually built this thing right, it could make lots of power.
It's my opinion that this is a very well engineered motor.
It's just too heavy. 90 pounds as it runs.
I'd also like to add that I've never lost a contest of acceleration.
