Is there a way...?
« on: July 07, 2007, 10:01:57 am »
is there a way to just lock one side of a transaxle where that one side would be the only wheel that pulls?

Why would you want to do that?
The transaxle from the factory will only have one wheel pulling the load.Thats the reason so many Imow drivers would have a cheek on the seat and one on the fender, to transfer weight to the pulling wheel to keep in on the ground.

I can see why he wants to lock one wheel. Say in IMOW, your turning only left all the time, if you set the transaxle up where only the right side tire pulls all the time, and the left time just free spins, it can help you get around the left turn faster.

Not if your chassis is set up correctly, if your weight is transferring properly, it's going to have a negative impact coming out of the corner, because only 1 tire is putting power to the ground.

if you pull the gear off the axle shaft will come out. if i were gonn a set it up for 1 wheel, try finding another gear for that left axle and grind the teeth off of it, that way your locking clip and all will still be in oplace and keep your axle in place with out it actually pulling.

I guess I'm still missing something here. Which would not be the first time...

I do know that if I split the case of a transaxle and made it race ready for whatever class that it may be in, I would lock it up by means of welding, adding gears, or fabricating a block for the bull gear and running a straight axle. There have been several posts on these procedures.

I maybe wrong on this but, if I am, I want you to show me on the track. We can talk about it all day long but when you pass me in the race, thats were it counts and I'll grow a bigger ear for that info.

And, them's the words of a man with several IMOWs on the trailer!! :D

Set the chassis up properly and adjust your tire pressures so it corners better, it's explained in the forum here, and weld the rear axle up solid so both wheels put power to the ground. Spinning one wheel is not an advantage.

but see that is the reason i only wont one will to pully cause the rules say u cant lock the rear end....they left the back of ur mower up in tech and kick the wheels to check that...and the pulling wheel always comes off the grounf coming out of the turn...if u lock one it would hook up alot better while others are in the turn spinning ill be gone....why wouldnt this work

If those are the rules you have to live by, then yes you have a point. PM member "1031" here on the forum, he's done it before.
